Guatemalan question : How come people from Zacapa dislike people from Quiche so much ?

Is it racism ?
Additional Details
The reason I thought it was racism is because most Zacapanecos are descendants of Europeans while Quichelenses are Ingigenous. My son's father who is Indigenous himself, makes fun of the Quichelenses.I tell him he's "the pot calling the kettle black."

Spidey .
Is kinda like asking why people from Berverly Hills don't like people from Boondox Kentucky lol .... Unfortunately there's ALWAYS racism within people's races, it's an issue that affects the entire world.
White people calling eachother rednecks, natives (indians) from Guate calling eachother indios, there's ALWAYS somebody that might be doing a little better than the other trying to bring them down somehow ya know. (shrugs)
We all make fun of people and where they are from back in Guate lol but I know things can get out of hand over some stupid sh*& , sad but true :-(

I had never heard such thing in my life before, but there may be some possibility to that. I don't think it is necessarily racism, since racism to me means hating another person based on their race and doing anything to get rid of such group -- kind of like the Nazis towards the Jews. It is more of an ethnic group tension, where one dislikes the other. When I lived in Guatemala and there was tension, it was mutual. I would say the feeling it's kind of like that of the Southerners against the Northerners in the USA. They dislike them but they are not forming terrorist groups or making plans to get rid of them. People from Zacapa tend to be violent, and people from Quiché a little conceited. These are all stereotypes, but they may contribute to your conclusion of why these two groups don't get along well. Again, this is the first time I hear something like that.

Good question! I am moving to Guatemala in a few weeks, and this has worried me somewhat. In the town of Aguacatan, Huehuetenango, the people have been fighting with each other over some stupid issue for the last few years. I was there in 1999, and all was well. We went to market and it was packed. In 2005, different story. People sitting in front of the court house all day and all night just to prove they are mad! Market is almost empty because most decided to start a 'new' market. It's like the kids who say, "I'm not gonna play with you anymore!" Very childish if you ask me. It all started with some of the people realizing that some of the people were not originally from there and had moved there mucho anos ago! Even the churches have split over this issue!
I've been told that 'racism' is whenever someone feels hated because of their race. So, I suppose that could be. How can we stop this? I hear they are trying to force everyone to take sides, and I can betcha I won't be taking any sides... they are both immature, and I won't take part in it. Hopefully, I can help them to see. They seem to respect me a lot.
