Historically, hurricanes hit Honduras every 20 years (FIFI, 1974, Mitch 1998). Late September, and October are the risky months. August presents a better outlook, sunny in the mornings, then it rains for a couple of hours, then sun again--Try the Caribbean coast corridor which is beautiful and inexpensive, from Tela to La Ceiba to Trujillo. Bay Islands of Honduras (where English is the main language)are cheaper than to travel to Belize.--

Ive been to Belize in May and August. Both were great. Im going back again Aug 31. Warmer inland, rain and lighting storms at night.

Dead center of Hurricane season.

First piece of advice: dont be afraid to travel just because it hurrican season. Hurricane season lasts for months so if you are let to believe that if you go to the caribean during hurrican season you'll have to wait a while.

Of course hurricanes are a threat but you can tell days in advance if a hurrican will hit the area you plan to visit. I once had a trip planned to cuba but had to cancel 2 days before because of hurrican Ivan. Anyway its pretty safe to travel during hurrican season and hurricanes rarely hit Central America (1998 Mitch was on of the worst hurricanes ever and those only happen every so often). I would recommend you do some homework contact hotels and people who have travelled during the dates you plan (www.tripadvisor.com) has some good forums.

Good luck! I hope you decide to come to Honduras its beatiful and between the two I'd pick Honduras you have the diving that Belize has plus mayan ruins, modern cities, more airports, etc.. GOOD LUCK

You could be affected by a hurricane, although the chances are slim. It is a good time because it is off season. You are still in the rainy season but it makes everything nice and green. And most rain is very brief and then it gets sunny again.
Be sure to visit Mayan sites in either country.

August is Hurricane Season so you do take a risk by going there. That is why it is cheaper to travel in this part of the world from June 1-Oct.I enjoy August in Central America because it is not as crowded. And it is cheaper. The weather is hot,but as long as you are on the coast, you will have a sea breeze.Bring bug spray and plenty of sunscreen.

Yes, especially if you are traveling to Honduras' Atlantic coast.

Remember that Mitch almost destroyed Honduras in 1998.

I was just in Central America in early June, at the start of hurricane season, and there were torrential downpours that scared the willies of even the seasoned old timers.

However, Mitch may have been an anomaly. Most Hurricanes grace the coast and seek the warmer waters of the Gulf of Mexico. There will be a lot of rainfall, but not necessarily hurricanes.
