What? careful of what? there is less crime in Peru than in New York. Peru has maybe little problems with petty theft but aside from that, not much violence.

Just do the common stuff to protect yourself from petty theft. Just don't show off your wallet of heavy gold collars and you should be fine.

Have fun, Peru is amazing. By the way the petty theft is in Lima but not in provinces. AT ALL.

Peru is very diverse but the average people land in Lima, stay one day or two to visit museums and some part of the area of Miraflores, then take bus to Ica, flight the Nazca lines, next day they head upward Arequipa and see the condors at the colca canyon , by going back they head to the lake titica at Puno and after toward Cusco know Machupicchu, hike some inca trail and sometimes they go to Manu or Puerto maldonado to watch the wild life of the amazon jungle.

Well which cities are you going to visit??, I live in Peru and work in tourism, we have a beautiful country but like many places with some problems.. so just be careful about petty theft, you can find some people trying to sell you many things on the streets, it's better if you buy souvenirs in the stores or recommended places. Don't carry very much cash, you can use your debit or credit card.
My country has many interesting places to see like Lima, Ica, Arequipa, Cusco, Puno and the Amazon jungle..
So you are welcome, enjoy your trip!!

Most importantly DO NOT DRINK THE WATER. Don't even let any get in your mouth in the shower. use bottled water to brush your teeth. Do not eat the salad or any fruit you do not peel yourself. This is no joke someone in our tour group got a little water in her mouth in the shower and had to be rushed to the hospital where she stayed for 4 days. It is the most important thing to know, Next is to bring baby wipes and hand sanitizer I do not think the country has heard of toilet paper and in the countryside when you have to go in a hole in the ground you need the wipes and the hand sanitizer as there is rarely a sink.

First of all: Your summer is our winter. Our winter it's totally cold. You are going to freeze yourself. Take a lot of winter clothes. And.....Yes, yes, Be careful in Peru, there is a lot of thieves and bad people. Look, I'm a peruvian, I'm 16 and my mother don't let me go out alone since 19 hours beacuse she's afraid of:
Rapists
Murderers
Crazys
Depravits (depravados)
Drug-adicts
Hijackers (Each day it's a new case)

But don't think that Peru is horrible, it's not like Bronx. My mother is like any latina mother, very worried.......Of course I go alone sometimes...but It's a little bit dangerous.

But, don't be worry, just forget those "little things" and have fun.
It's a good place. If you are going to Lima, You should go to the Congress, "El Palacio de Justicia" (Where the president lives), La Plaza Bolognesi, El Estadio Nacional, La Plaza de Armas, Museo de la Nación, Parroquia Santa María Magdalena....

If you go to Cusco, You must go to Machu Picchu, visit other ruins, and I don't know what else. (I'm from Lima)
And, of course, never eat in the streets, If you want to taste our Picarones, Anticuhos, Turrones, Chicharrones....do it into a store or supermarket.

What are you talking about ?, Peru is so dangerous, the terrorism os not on Peru, like any country, it has some ugly parts, but Peru is a beautiful country, like Latina_R, only just don't show your wallet of heavy gold collars.

Good Luck in Peru becuase it has beautiful beaches and beautiful turism places,

If you want some information , you may go to www.peru.com/index_english.asp

I love Peru. I have been twice. The kids trying to sell you stuff in Cuzco can be a little annoying but you won't have any trouble unless you ask for trouble. ie flashing allot of cash etc etc.

reggae_music_lover
Don't forget to check out Iquitos...amazon jungle and river.

And yes, there is petty theft. Just don't leave it laying on the table if you don't want to loose it.

Enjoy

fugitivo_prisionero
Yeah, don't eat on the street. Even we peruvians are damaged with that poison XD

Uhmm, It's a really cheap country, so if you see something worth just like it is in your country, you're probably being tricked.

Don't use the public system transportation (combis or buses) we tend to steal things from caucassians.

Stay ALWAYS with your group. Don't visit the working girls, they charge a lot and may have diseases.

fiddler
Be careful on the buses you take.

John SW
Yes....be very, very careful. Not a place to make mistakes in.
