For Guatemala I can offer you the following advice.
Use common sense. Don't carry too much cash or valuables on you. Try to plan your trip to cut down on traveling back and forth. Getting places takes a little while, but once you get there you won't be disappointed. Find somewhere to stay on Lake Atitlan, I've stayed in San Lucas Toliman and Panajachel, both are beautiful. I believe that Semuc Champey, about an hour from Coban, is a must see on your trip. There isn't much to do there but it is beautiful. It takes several hours to get to it, but once you are there, you'll love it. If you want to go to Tikal, You can fly out of Guatemala City for about $130.00. I found Lago Izabel a beautiful lake. I stopped in a small town and rented an innertube for my kids from a local boy who charges $1.00 for the day. It's hard to find a place that is as beautiful and inexpensive as Guatemala. |

Absolutely.
- Don't dress like a tourist: old jeans, tee-shirt, and sneakers
- Wallet in front pocket
- Get a good guidebook for hotels and restaurants
- Pack a good first-aid kit with preventative and curative items for sun, insects, and intestinal infections. For example: suntan lotion (preventative/sun), anti-amoeba medicine (intestinal infections/curative)
- Have fun |

Guatemala is the most beautiful, but dangerous still.
Always watch your back, don't go out at night, don't travel alone, don't stop your car to take pictures,...don't act like a tourist!.....stay in established resorts that have guarded perimeters.....Mansion del Rio or Banana Palms Resort(Awesome!)....visit Bruno's Marina in Rio Dulce...English speaking owners and wait staff, too:-)
If you know someone...visiting the small village towns is enlightening....most friendly people, beautifully adorned, cheap eats ....what an experience. Rental cars from Tabarini in Antigua are a good deal...nice people. Churches are not to be missed either...severely religious people....completely fasinating architecture! |
