Has anyone been to Cartagena, Colombia?

What was the nightlife like? Was there anything in particular you think a tourist to that area should know?

I Love Cartagena. You should go see the Fort of San Felipe. (Romance in the time of Cholera and Romancing the Stone were filmed there) The night life is great. The Salsa dancing is over the top. Be sure to see the palace of inquistion, (Wild torture stuff for non-believers) I would also go to Islas Rosario. However take some bug spray. Especially if you rent a kayak and get near the mangrove trees. The bugs are fierce. Check out the architecture. Ask why the knockers to the doors are so hight. If you want to shop there, be aware that there will be many in the streets passing out "business" cards. They will tell you its for a discount at said store. Fiction. They get a "referral" fee.. which you pay.. So dont take the card. Also you will be offered "Free" tours. Go, but be aware you will be asked to "tip" at the end. Do so.. I think its worth the ten or so dollars.

had a great time! and much salsa to enjoy.. i stayed at the hilton which was overpriced and the rooms were not up to what i was paying for. if i were to go again i would rent possibly from these patrons..

much cozier and connected with the old city. although the amenities - swimming pool, book store, bar, gym, tennis court - at the hilton were really nice.. but is that why you would want to go to cartagena?

the cartagenainfo site seems down, but it was a great reference for more places to stay for a reasonable price.

have a great trip!

Cartagena is such a beautiful city. Be sure to visit Islas del Rosario (Rosario Islands) which is the paradise. In the old city, beyond the walls, you can find excellent restaurants and cafes with terrific patios and terraces. Also have a walk in the beach in the neighbourhood of Castillo Grande at night. You can find a myriad of hotels and rates depending on the location, season and your money. Dont forget to eat in a restaurant called "El Bony" which is located in the beach and serve the best seafood of the city in a traditional restaurant. Also try to eat the candies and small food that are sold in the street (Alegria, Cocada, Arepa de Huevo) but be aware of where you eat it, try to find a good place in the street.

salsa salsa salsa!
just enjoy being in the stunning walled city...maybe get on a Chiva first and they will generally drop you off at a club after....

on a general note, get a boat to Playa Blanca....stunning! but go to the far left of the island where you can hire a hamock and will be undisturbed by the forced sellin and more touristy side...which really isnt touristy either, but the far left beach is STUNNING and pretty empty...paradise to yourself!!!
also the mud volcano (see guide book) is great, and although its mentioned as being hard to get to, thats half the fun and really not that bad...can get cheap motorbike taxis all the way back which is SOOOOOO much fun!!!
