I was born in Bogota Colombia and I can tell you that in the last 5 years things have improved both from an economic point of view and a security point fo view.

Bogota has gone through a mayor transformation. They have developed a massive transportation System called Transmilenio, the government has given the citizens parks, recreational areas, museums as well as hundreds of libraries.

For more information you can visit:

However, I do recommend you that if you go to Colombia be aware. There is always going to be somebody looking for stuff that does not belong to them.

Bogota Colombia is relatively safe, I'm assuming you are from the US. I wouldn't go completely alone, take someone or a group with you. Just watch your back. I am going to Costa Rica this Summer. They advised us not to bring backpacks, because the "bad people" (haha) living there can easily take a knife and rip the bottom of your bag, haveing you lose everything without knowing it. Have fun if you do go!

i just came through there a few months ago, its quite safe, and not the bs you get on tv. there a few places to avoid and youll know them because even the locals dont go there, its just like any country, there are thieves, and killers. dont piss people off, and make sure you never let your belongins out of sight. columbians are extremely friendly, minus alittle bit of geurilla warfare, youll be fine.
