Has anyone been to Huehuetenango?

Well, well, well...now someone on here is speaking my language! I am actually moving to Aguacatan, Huehuetenango, Guatemala in just under 50 days (and counting!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I am very excited! I have been there twice, and my husband is from there. I will only be able to give more accurate answers about Aguacatan, but I have spent some time in Huehue. (That's what the locals call Huehuetenango, Huehuetenango, Guatemala.) In Aguacatan, there are a couple different Mayan dialects spoken and they are still sort of 'fighting' about who's is called what because they've only recently realized that they are quite different. But neither are at all like Spanish. The children are learning Spanish in school now, but many of the older ones (including my mother-in-law) do not speak Spanish. (Hey, there are benefits to that for me... 'I no speaka your language'... LOL!)
Many villages speak their own dialect, and in some cases 30 minutes drive can mean a whole different dress and language!
Aguacatan is a small town or village. There are small stores, restaurants, schools, and markets a couple days a week. The women have their own dress there and are extremely nice!
The city of Huehue is much larger, smaller than Xela or Guatemala City, but larger than Aguacatan. There are chain restaurants as well as at least one mall. (Payless Shoe Source Store, Dominoes Pizza, as well as other well-known American names. There are good markets, better schools, doctors, and appliance stores there. I liked that city quite well, except for the bad pollution in the air.
P.S. The weather can get colder at night, and hotter during the day, but is generally very nice throughout the day.

I have been there a couple times. Spanish is the dominant language, but there are many many speakers of the various Mayan languages, particularly Mam.

Its good if you're going to Todos Santos Cuchamutan, but good for little else. Its dusty, kinda cold (for Guatemala, dips below freezing at night in winter), not particularly charming really. If you want to be in that part of Guatemala I recommend Quetzaltenango (Xela'ju), its better.

Mostly Spanish, Huehue is a small town but friendly people.
You can always find english speaking people everywhere.

Spanish is the main language. There is a private school in Huehue (Wayway) for missionary kids that teaches in English. I think the rest will be spanish.

wow now thats a name i havent heard in ages....I was there once for a few days on my way back from El salvador...i was stuck there broke, till i got a western union....Obviously spanish is the language, bigger town than i thought it would be by the map. overall really liked it...

Guatemala's main language is Spanish, but the Mayans speak different native languages (over 20). For information on Spanish schools google INGUAT, that the national tourist information center. However, the best Spanish schools are located in Quetzaltenago (AKA Xela and second capital) and Antigua Guatemala (about 45 km from the capital). Huehuetenango is one of the colder areas in Guatemala and also expensive. Quetzaltenango is better for living in, it has all the commodities of the capital city but not the crime.
