It's not as hot as you may think it will be. Lima can be quite cloudy and cold at night - make sure your room has heating as they can be quite damp. If you are doing the Inca trail/Cuzco be prepared for some cold and wet weather. On the 2nd day of the Inca Trail (Dead Woman's Pass) we climbed through snow. If you are going to be high up (Lake Titicaca) make sure you have warm clothes for night time (Puno was freezing most of the time!).

It never rained all day, nor was the cold unbearable, but make sure you pack one warm jumper, a scarf and a waterproof jacket. However, Peru is a truly fantastic travel experience, so don't let the weather put you off.

Like others have said it depends where you are.

Cuzco was v cold and we did have some rain which was unusual. But it was also very sunny.

The Inca Trail was cold but you find you get warm when walking then when you stop at height you get cold.
You sleep at altitude so gloves, woolly socks etc are essential.

As a rule when you are at altitude the temperature is cooler whereas lower altitude and sea level towns are warmer.

Mancora in the north (a peruvian newquay!) was v warm. as were alot of areas in the north.

Enjoy Peru it is an amazing country.

Hot and dry along the Pacific coast, however, not unbearable.
Going up in the Andes is always cool at night. The eastern jungle is hot humid and wet. . .east side of Andes

August is winter in the Southern Hemisphere, where Peru is, so it will be cold.
How cold, will depend on where you are.
In Lima, it is mildly cold (about 55° to 60° F) but extremely humid, which makes it feel a little colder, but nothing too bad.
Cuzco is in the mountains, so there you can get temperatures around 30° F in the mornings, but it warms up during the day.
In the jungle, Iquitos, Tarapoto, Tambopata, Pucallpa, ... well it is always hot, but at least it will not be as rainy as it would be in the summer.

You would be in the middle of winter. Winter in Peru is not fun starts in July and ends in September. The summer in Peru is from December to the end of March. Also winter in Peru is 95% overcast and rains alot, not like in America but it's a very fine rain what the Peruvians call Garua, the thing is it never stops.
