Spent a month backpacking in Belize and Guatemala and at first I used the Lonely Planet Guide Book. But in the end, it is the locals and the other backpackers who let you know what is interesting and, also importantly for Central America, safe. A quick history lesson of the area via internet can also spike your interest to find certain treasures that the guide books do not necessarily point out.
But if you are going to Belize, it has some crazy cheap islands (Caye Caulker) right on the reef that has the most amazing snorkeling. Again, I asked around for a cheap place to sleep and got $10 a night. Not bad for a Caribbean island. Good luck and I hope that this little info helped. |

I preferred the Footprint guide, as it contained more useful information.
If you are on a budget, then countries like Guatemala, Nicaragua, Argentina and Bolivia are great. Ecuador, Chile and Costa Rica are good too, but more expensive.
Getting around is quite easy in most countries, and you will make lots of new friends. |

If you´re going to Perú, Bolivia, and the Amazonas aerea in Brazil, always drink bottled water.
It sounds stupid, but it´s not.
Also, in the Andes and Macchu Picchu area, you might feel "dizzy" because of the hight.
Trust the local folks when they offer you coca leaves to make some tea.It won´t make you high, but you´ll feel better. |
