my mother is from cartagena, and my whole family lives there, and I was just there for 5 weeks in the summer, had the most amazing time. Colombia is cleaning up a lot! the country is doing really well. Cartagena is gerilla safe, they are mostly in medellin. Taxis are really safe and the night life as well. AS of everywhere in the world each place has it so so areas as long as the after hr. don't get you there it's fine.
The centro is the safest place in cartagena, there is soo much to do and it is very beautiful.
Like they say there, Cartagena es embrujador. totally true.
My favorite spot to go out at night is called cafe Del mar, it's on a mural in the centro. |

Colombianos consider Cartagena to be composed of two parts: "Old" and "New". "Old" has a colonial fort and many colonial style buildings and several good restaurants. "New" has a variety of newer hotels. Dine in "Old" and sleep in "New". Petty crime is rampant. |

Relatively safe but make certain that you do not take the local buses.
Hire a driver to take you around. |

I'm a Colombia, I've been in Cartagena a zillion of times and I still find it hard to understanding why tourist love to flock there for the thousands.
But this is just my own personal taste. I hate crowds. Just go. They're shooting a movie down there right now. It's "Love in the times of cholera" about a man who waits for the woman he loves all of his life until finally, when ther're both in their 80's he fulfils his dream of making love to her.
Have fun! No guerrillas around. Relax. |
