Has anyone traveled to Chile lately? We are married, 35 yrs old and are thinking of going in Aug for 4-5 days

Are there any suggestions on what to see/do, where to stay and what to eat?? We are able to get by as we speak Spanish so we are open to everything.

My wife and I were in Chile for 8 weeks over the new year and Christmas, some of our journal is online and is linked below.

I highly recommend that you spend your time based in the Santiago and Valporaiso area. Our journal mentions a wonderful B&B in Valporaiso called the B&B Costa Azul. It is a great place to stay, lovely view of the ocean and whole city.
There is a subway from Valpo to Vina del Mar and it only takes about 15 minutes. Defintiely Valpo is a more authentic place to stay than the beach resort that Vina is.

If you have the time, then head up to La Serena and visit the Elqui Valley where Pisco is grown.

In Santiago, there is many fantatsic things to see and do. Between these three places, and only 5 days, you will not have enough time to see a fraction of what is on offer.

My favourite of the three? Definitely Valporaiso. See the journal.

I love Chile. You will be getting there in the winter so the weather may not be very nice unless you go to Viña del Mar or La Serena.
Santiago is beautiful but will probably be quite smoggy. The south of the country is fantastic tourist country but not too great in the winter--lots of rain. If you like snow skiing you are headed for some real thrills. You have to teat every type of empanada you can find.

In this time of the year, even though is pretty, I wouldn't recommend south, since it's winter and weather is kind of bad...but if you stay in Santiago, you have to go to Cerro San Cristobal, Farellones (or any other sky center), down town Santiago, you have a lot of malls to buy stuff and just to take a look; you should spend couple days en Viña del Mar too, 1:30 hour away, so you can enjoy the beach. A very touristic city, and it's right next to Valparaíso, the main port of the country, where you can find a lot of old and beautiful architecture in the hills, really pretty.
Remember you have to try empanadas, enjoy the wonderful bread, have some seafood, pastel de papas and pastel de choclo are some of my favourites.
If you would like to know something more specific, you're welcome to e-mail me. Good luck!

omg
I wish I could go to Chile too!! I miss it!!
well..there are many places where you could go there, choose either north or south...in the north in August the weather will be a lot better than in the south, if you like dry weather and desiertos, calor, llamas, cactus, you better go there, you can visit Iquiue (there is a casino)Vina del Mar (a nicer casino), La serena. But like me, if you like lakes mountains, forest, animals, birds, take boat trips, eat seafood you better go to Puerto Montt, Chiloe (which has german influence) and a beautiful river. have a nice trip and don't forget to try the "pastel de choclo" , empanadas, asados, curanto(in Chiloe) and many kinds of the best sea food

I can't give you any suggestions, I'm just jealous because you must live really close by in order to buy a plane ticket for only 4 or 5 days! Where I live a ticket is about $1000!!

Either way, que tengan buen viaje--diviértanse mucho!
