Yes I have!
And let me tell you, it was one of the most beautiful experiences I've had in my life!
I've been to other countries and mainly in Europe took the train but I didn't get to see much since it was too fast.
The train from Cusco to Machu Picchu is amazing, but do not buy the economy class seat because it's uncorfortable (people use this wagon to transport their goods -animals, belongings), unless you want to interact with passengers closer, which is a nice experience. But if you are looking for a quite nice ride while enjoying the route don't buy the cheap ticket.
You can also make the Inca trail (that can take 3 days/5days or some hours depending on your choice), but by the time you get to the ruins you are so tired that you don't want to keep walking up the mountains -unless of course you are a trekker.
Take a good camera with you. You won't regret it. I still keep my pictures of my trip and everytime I look at them I want to go back.
Also if you are in Cusco go for the Ollantaytambo ruins, Sacsayhuaman Ruins, Pisa town, etc.
Good luck on your trip!!
Tips: Drink coca leaves tea (mate de coca) at the airport, that helps your body adjust to the altitude of the Andes when you arrive at Cusco.
You don't need to pay for the tourist guide at Machu Picchu, just read some before going and you'll be fine unless you want to ask questions. |

The train from Cusco to Machu Picchu is awsome!
After 4 hours you reach the Aguas Calientes station (final stop) at the base of the Machu Picchu Mountain. There's are some restuarants, hotels and souvenir stores outside the trains station. To go up you either walk which is insane!! or get a bus, buses go up and down the mountain every 6-10 minutes (tickets are sold at Aguas Calientes unless it was included in the train ticket, double check for it) once up, you buy your ticket to enter the sanctuary, you have up to 6 O'clock to explore (check at what time your train leaves, get the last one or even better choose to spend the night at one of the hotels at aguas calientes!)
If you're going with a group, you can Go by road to Ollantaytambo, and from there take the train to Aguas Calientes (just 1.5 hrs.)

Have a great trip! |

Hi
you can either trek there or take the train
if you take the train there you get at machu picchu at 10AM with 1000s of other tourists.
we took the two day trek there and you stay over night at aquas calientes.. then you go back to machu picchu at 6AM when there is hardly anyone there...
my wife has also done the lares trek to machu picchu and loved it..

Yes! ! A friend and I went in October 2006, and it was the best trip of our lives!! I would advise taking the train (as we did) because I wanted to be rested enough to enjoy Machu Picchu, which was our main reason for visiting Peru. We were in the middle class on the train, and it was comfortable enough - not to snazzy or uppity but not too cramped either. The best part of it was the the picture windows on the top of the train so we could enjoy the scenery and the Andes going by. They served us lunch on the way over and there was a fashion show of alpaca goods on the way back - very entertaining!
We stayed overnight in Aguas Callientes for 2 nights and took the bus to MP both days. We got up at the crack of dawn our 2nd day there so we could enjoy MP without the crowds. We also climbed the neighboring mountain Waina (sp?) Picchu, and even though it's a hard climb, start early and it will be worth it. The bird's eye view of MP down below was something I will remember for the rest of my life!!
Good luck and enjoy!! |

Yes!!! I went in October 2007 and it was the best trip for me!!! I traveled on the train from Ollantaytambo Station to Aguas Calientes Station at night (7.00pm). I arrived to Aguas Calientes 11 pm and stayed overnight for 01 night. At very morning, I might buy my ticket to entrance to Machupicchu in INC Office and took the bus 6.00 am to go to Machupicchu… It was absolutely beautiful experience!!! |
