I have never been, but I have seen photos of the Incan ruins of Machu Picchu, and they are incredible! Learn about 'em first, they'll be much more interesting to see if you do.

No but I've heard many good things .... I say - be brave and go for it, you'll be fine.

Mrs. Obama rules!
I was born here, I live here and I will probably die here. It's a great country, with a very rich cultural history and with the greatest food and dishes I've ever tasted. Am I biased? Of course, I'm peruvian and proud to be a peruvian. I've travelled a lot (Asia, Europe, Africa and America) and I love to visit other places but I always return here because it's home to me. We do have our share of problems (economic, political, etc) but peruvians never give up, we are optimist fighters. We have 3 beautiful regions with lots of flora and fauna and in a few hours we could have one of the 7 new wonders of the world: Machu Picchu.
About the weather: it's pretty aweful right now, it's winter and the temp drops to 13 degrees celsius but with nearly 100% humidity. Bring a nice heavy jacket. You can buy a scarf and gloves here, there are wonderful made from alpaca.
Cultural differences? Not so much in Lima, you'll find a very "americanized" city. As for the highlands, yes, it's very different as it is quite poor, and rural but the landscape is breathtaking and people are very respecful of tourists.
And yes, we do have gangs like any other place in the world, and I would say we have less gangs than in places like LA or NY!!!

The people, the history, the energy, the land itself are all amazing. The food is just OK, nothing fantastic.
