I'm from Panama and I go there every summer. Most people are attracted to the Canal but there are places where you can explore the countryside and the rainforests. I honestly haven't done that because I tend to stray away from tourist who gawk and treat us as if we are slow and cannot understand English.
But I digress...
Panama City is a bit more "Americanized" because it has become such a tourist destination and for that reason I prefer Colon (where my grandparents are from). I guess it has a more authentic feel to it.

The Panama canal looked great.
But you have to do the cruise through the canal from Pacific to Atlantic. Amazing project, beautiful country side and variety.
Just looking at one little bit at the Miraflores lock is like looking at a big boat going by in a ditch. Very boring and waste of time. |

I lived there for three years - my dad was in the Air Force - but it was back in the 70's, so I'm not sure how much it would help your project. |
