It is a very very poor country. Dont take a flashy camera. Skinny one that fits in your pocket is the best. Dont flash a lot of cash.. Dont be anywhere alone after dark. |

I just got back from my 3rd trip to Guatemala. It is a beautiful country. Antigua is worth a tour if you like to see historical places. Of course the volcano's are everywhere. While I was there a couple of weeks ago, one of them erupted slightly...nothing major, but it was really neat to see all the smoke the next day!
Use common sense that you would use in any major city. If you're in Guatemala City then stay in the tourist zones after dark. During the day you should be fine, just be aware of your surroundings and like others said don't be flashy. FYI: The taxi's near hotels are usually the most reliable.
Enjoy your trip!! |

Guatemala is a beautiful country and has great people...once you get out of Guatemala City you can have an amazing time just use common sense...Lake Atitlan is a great place to go...the Sunday market (also held on Thurs) in Chichicastenengo is an experience not to be missed...there are volcanos around Antigua you can hike....so much to do in that country hard to list it all...Have fun and enjoy your visit...To get more of an idea what you might like to do go to: http://www.tripadvisor.com

For sure you can climb Pacaya (which will take you an afternoon or morning) and Agua (which will take you a day). You can find a tour for both in Antigua. Agua is very nice and very high, but Pacaya is smoking and you can look into the eye and see the glow.
Additionally, Tikal, Antigua, Panajachel and Lake Atitlan, Chichicastenengo, Rio Dulce (in that order) are my list of things to see and do. |
