Definitely go to Tabacon Resort, located very close to the Arenal Volcano (which is currently active), the hot springs park is so romantic and beautiful (at night if it's a clear night, you can seat on your balcony and see the lava coming down from the crater, WOW! simply surreal)... the spa is fantastic and the hotel is very beautiful with great food. I'm sure you are your wife to be would have a fantastic and unforgettable time there!

Yes, I honeymooned in Costa Rica two years ago. My husband and I went to Tamarindo (Pacific Ocean) for our honeymoon. It was fantastic! (obviously). Seriously, we stayed in a really nice hotel called El Capitán Suizo. It's in the quiet part of town. Excellent restaurant (the manager was from Spain) and not very expensive. The hotel is a little expensive but it's worth it. They have a nice pool, the rooms are really beautiful, the beach is beautiful, and you can take many different tours (snorkeling, sea kayak, sunset cruise on a sailboat).
Their website is www.hotelcapitansuizo.com.

I am a travel agent and have sent many couples to Costa Rica for their honeymoon. Cost Rica is not your usual honeymoon destination, but you may not be an usual honeymoon couple. You have a lot to do in Costa Rica, it may end up being an active holiday. Most of honeymooners want to explore each other more than the surroundings, this is why they usually stay in an all inclusive hotel on a gorgeous beach and stay put. That does not mean that you have to do the same. You may be that couple that want to bond through your experiences and this is (in my opinion) very admirable.
As everywhere in the world it comes down to how much you want to do and how much money you are willing to spend. If you have a limited budget, I would still recommend to stay at least 3 nights (possibly the last ones) in a more upscale hotel/spa resort. This will become the highlight of your trip and give you the feeling that you have done something special on your honeymoon, mainly when this is a special vacation.
In Costa Rica there are a numerous types of hotels, starting from farms to boutique and spa hotels. Try to talk with your travel agent, pick up brochures that sell Costa Rica. I cannot recommend you any, as I live and work in Canada and I assume you are in U.S. - you probably have different choices than mine.
There are also lots of website specialized in Costa Rica only. Just do a search and you will have pages of websites to choose from.
Regarding the itinerary, if you do not want to contact a travel agent, you need to buy a guide ( my personal favorite is DK guide - look on Amazon- because it gives you descriptions on places with maps in them). My suggestion is to start your trip by visiting the inland (Arenal Area, Monteverde and a must for honeymooners - Tabacon Springs) and being more active.Finish it on the beach (do not go to Jaco beach - I would recommend that area more for singles as it is a party zone and not so romantic). Stay more toward the Northern Pacific side of Costa Rica. I would choose the beach at the end, because the last impression lasts longer and you need time together to relax and be with each other. You want this impression to last for lifetime.

Costa Rica offers fantastic and romantic options for honeymooners.
No matter if you want to stay at one hotel or make a circuit around the country to see some of the active volcanoes, rainforest, watefalls, etc - you will surely enjoy it.

I recommend you contact a local tour operator that will help you with ideas, there is so much to do and some things to consider (transportation you prefer, transfer times from one attraction to the other, hotel prices and categories, etc.).

Also some hotels offer special honeymoon packages that include romantic dinner (on the beach for example), fruits and wine in the rooms, spa treatments for two, and much more, so the agency will give you the best choices and also very good prices.
