Hello, I'm going to Lima, Peru next year. Do the airport employees speak English fluently? |
I'm staying w/ my friend there who will pretty much be my companion throughout my trip, but I was just wondering if I need to learn more Spanish in order to get around in the airport. Thanks |

hmmmm it depends on the employee:
crew: yes
migrations affairs: almost not but ask for a bilingual
customs: ask for a bilingual if necessary (they will look for one when they realize u dont speak spanish)
restaurants: yes
cabs: yes (ask for a bilingual otherwise)
duty free: yes (most of them)
Hope it helps |

If your friend is meeting you at the airport, you should not have a problem.
As for learning spanish, it is better to try and learn what you can as you can actually converse with people. At least you can get your idea across.
As for people speaking english fluently in the airport, there are people there who can translate. It will probably annoy some that you are in a spanish speaking country not able to speak spanish. I have seen some "gringos" raise their voice as if it will help someone "hear". I have also seen people say insulting things in english as if the person does not understand english. I have also seen some of those same people not able to make the flight due to those remarks. The person behind the counter may not be the owner of the company but they DO issue the boarding passes.
Just remember, if the delay is due to you not being able to understand spanish....do not loose yor cool and be patient and polite. Do not be the "ugly" foreigner.
enjoy your trip |

Immigraiton agents, employed by the ministry of the exterior, normally only speak Spanish. But most people employed by the aiport do speak English, even the baggage handlers can speak some basic sentences. Airline employees generally speak very good English. |

NO... they speak SPANISH.. and if you plan to go to Peru you need to learn more than the 20 words of Spanish that most AmeriKans know so they can tell their friends they are 'fluent' in the language.
I don't quite understand what the problem would be with getting around in an Airport.. unless you have never BEEN in an airport before... |

Best advice is to get a travel english to spanish dictionary, most of them do not speak english. Learn a little bit of Spanish.
The main word you will need in the airport is: ¿Donde esta? this means where is?
then just learn the basic things you will need in an aiport and add them to the end:
For example ¿Donde esta el baño? - where is the bathroom?
¿Donde esta el control de passaportes? - Where is the passport control |
