How can I establish a life in Costa Rica?

I recently went on a vacation to Costa Rica and loved it. What steps need to be taken to live there, and are there job/business opportunities there to make a decent living?

Really the only way to 'make a living' is to buy and develop land and that is very sad. if you know anything about construction or have experience in any tourism ventures you could exlpore that as well. Don't set your expectations too high..you'll be disappointed.

Really the best way to "establish" live is indeed to meet and marry a tica (local lady). you'll soon be fluent in the language and her contacts can be a huge help to you in any business venture.

Before you were commit to LIVING here, you should spend at least a YEAR here. Spend time exploring the different areas and deciding what type of climate you like best.... there are many. Mountains, cooler
Beaches, hot
Forests, humid
You also need to experience the dry and rainy seasons, each lasting 6 months long. You might be okay with it hot and sunny for 1/2 the year but then realize that you just can't handle the continuous rainfall.

There are often homes that you can rent from people that like to return to the states during the rainy season. I know of a guy who had to return to his practice back home in the states to make some money and ended up renting his home for $150 a MONTH!! There are a LOT of those type of opportunites here....

Come back for an extended vacation and get to know some of us in different towns. make some connections..see how you REALLY like it!!

Good luck

Contact their embassy with all your questions. They'll answer them the best they can. They are also the ones who will give you a visa.

Yep ! Costa Rica is nice, but so are about 100 other places. Explore the world a bit before deciding where you want to live. Throw your stuff in a back back and start south, through Texas, Mexico, Honduras, Guatemala, El Salvatore, Panama etc. when you start seeing ice bergs around the cape, make a left turn and start back North. I about 3 years you will have many answers.

either move to where all the americans are or stay away from them, whichever would make you more comfortable.

I would reccomend going with the Americans, if you are young and in your 20s. There are tons and tons of business opportunities out there, just please don't develop anything too much.

That country is getting way too developed
