How can I get a birth certificate from Guatemala? |
i was born in guatemala, adopted and brought to the US when i was a baby. i'm in desperate need of my birth certificate and social security card (both have disappeared). i can't get it in the US. what do i do? i also don't have any government issued ID (due to not having these documents). will that be a problem when trying to get these things?
i should also mention that the only ID i do have is a school ID BUT it says the name i've gone by all my life, which isn't my legal name. my parents were dumb and never properly changed it. |

The first thing you should do is contact the Civil Registry of the town you were born. This is very important since a birth is register in the town where it takes place. When you contact them, you will be asked for your date of birth and any kind of information like your parents name (since its possible that your name has been changed).
If you need any help post the name of the town and I could contact the civil registry of your town of birth. |

I was in a similar position as you. I was born in Puerto Rico and adopted and brought to the US. But since Puerto Rico is part of the US I was able to get the birth certificate from the US. Have you tried contacting some place back in Guatemala? Please tell me if you find out.
Thanks |

I'm not sure exactly how you can go about it, I know that if you had any family contacts back in Guatemala it would be a lot easier, but been that you were adopted and then brought to the U.S. as a child, that might not be possible.
You might want to contact the Guatemalan consulate, below is the link to their site. Except all the info they have on there is in Spanish, you could always call or email them.
Hope it helps!! |
