I am currently living in a condo in Desamparados, Costa Rica. We have two bedrooms and two bathrooms. It is not super fancy and our neighbors are all Ticos (we like that). We pay $400 a month and found it through the Tico Times, the English newspaper that is published every Friday.
Most areas in Costa Rica are safe if you guard against robbery, which sadly seems to be part of life in every Mexican and Central American country I have visited. There is very little violent crime here, the people are very friendly, and it's an easy place for Americans to live.
To find this place, I sent emails to the advertisers telling them what I wanted. I did not say the price, just what I wanted which was a two-bedroom furnished unit with cable and Internet access. I got about 20 responses and looked at a few units, settling on the one we are in.

Easy ! Don/t go to Costa Rica
If you want to live in a Spanish speaking country that is very friendly and accepts new residences, go to Panama...
The Costarican government the past few years has the attitude that all Americans are super rich and need to be plucked of their money... The import duty on items (cars, personal furniture etc) is absolutly astronomical...
All of the people I know that had property in CR has or either are in the process of leaving for Panama...
Being raised in Panama, and still having lots of school mates who live there, I do know what the status is there and of CR....
Panamanian people are extremely friendly..
Safe Places in Panama.. Mostly everywhere except the Atlantic City of Colon.. Needless to say, every city in the world has bad areas...
For more info, there are many, many web sites about Panama in the Yahoo Groups.. Just go there and type in Panama...
Good luck, and do yourself a huge favor and do not go to Panama.... |

There is an English language newspaper originating in Costa Rica called The Tico Times. You can access it on-line at
ticotimes.com. Look at the ads or in the classified section. You are generally safer outside of San Jose. But you must always be careful. You have a sign on your head that says "TOURIST". |
