It is possible to get to Costa Rica, but your question has to be clarified. You said you have to fly to the USA. Do you have a valid passport from your country of origin? Do you need a visa to go to the USA? If you have a criminal record, you may not be granted even a transit visa by the USA.
However, if you have a valid passport and Costa Rica does not require a visa for you to fly into the country (it doesn't require a visa from most countries), that's all you need. Your passport will get you into the country and you can stay legally for 90 days.

Best is to go thru Mexico or Toronto so you don't need to land in the states. If the record was juvenile it does not show; if it was adult, you might be able to stay in the duty free area, but don't reveal anything. |

You just want to get to Costa Rica? Where from? How bad a criminal record? How long ago? How long do you plan to be in Costa Rica?
Depending on these facts, I'll answer your last question: Yes, it's possible. |

depends on where your flying from...you need to clarify your question. and add more details then you get a more appropriate answer. |

First, what country did your criminal record occur at? And if you are still on probation? Most probation terms have conditions about leaving the country. If you are still on probation, and your terms are, “you can not leave the country”, you will be begging for trouble!
Now, ff you were a teenage (under 18) when you got the criminal record, chances are, it has been removed when you got to be over 18.
However, if you have a criminal record over 18, it depends on what that record is even if you are off probation. Misdemeanor crimes (petty thief and shoplifting etc) will not go into ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement) central database, but felony crimes “usually” do, especially if they are server enough from another country, and they remain in that database for God-knows how many years!
So you will be taking a gamble that when arriving in States (all entries are now scanned from ICE’s database) and if you get lucky in the US, you still face the some problem when arriving in CR. Either government may detain and maybe even deport compliments of the government as an undesirable.
Second, what country do you have a passport from? If you have a valid passport you can still travel (providing none of the conditions above apply), which obviously you must have when saying. “I have to arrive in the States.” So if that is the case, whatever “criminal record” you had was not sever enough to justify it being put into ICEs “watch list” which Costa Rica’s Immigration has. And with that said, you should be Okay to travel to one of the best countries in the world.
But as common sense tells you, you should spend a few bucks and contact a CR immigration attorney just to be safe.
Good luck .... and best wishes... |
