There are two beaches named Playa Hermosa in Costa Rica. One is located in Guanacaste which I/m sure is what you are talking about, while the other Playa Hermosa is a tad South of Jaco.
In Guanacaste, I/d take a bus. It is about 40 miles.

Playa Hermosa and Tamarindo are about 1 hr apart. They are both great I lived in Playa Hermosa for a month over the summer last year and it is truly amazing! Why leave? But in Tamarindo you can take lots of surfing lessons and be exposed to a bit more civilization then you'll find in Playa Hermosa!

Playa Hermosa in Papagayo is about 60 km away from Tamarindo. I would take a bus. There is a bus service that communicates Liberia and Playa Panama and goes through Playa Hermosa. So I would recommend you take this bus and get of at Comunidad. And then wait for a bus that says Tamarindo.
If it is the Playa Hermosa near Jacó is even further away and I don´t know what the bus service is like in that area.
