How is the panama canal useful to the U.S ?

Before it was built, ships had to sail all the way around South America with cargo. The canal makes the trip much shorter, and saves money.
Panamax ships are the biggest that can fit. Many can't now, and it will be enlarged.

cfish_85
It provided a faster route for trading in the Early 20th Century

Faith
Ships can pass through instead of going all the way around south america. i think that's pretty important!

O.K. First of All..Before the year 2000 most of the earnings tof the Canal went to the US..Now I guess that there is a treaty and a portion of the earnings go to the US as a payment of the debt that we have with the US....
Now, I believe that part of the treaty also states the American Vessels (military) have special fees to use the Canal, So tehre is the number one answer, When there is a war going on it is cheaper, less time, and better conditions to travel across the canal, instead of going all the way to argentina and cross there.
Number 2 is Economy (Export and Import) Most of the Products in the world cross through the canal. There we have the Colon Free zone that works as an Import Export Station not only for the US but for all the Countries in the World, so there you go answer # 2 Economy

I would say that number three would or could be that the Panama Canal HAs created a large number of International banks to have a station there, so for the Banking and Money Business I would say that Panama is one of the Few countries in the WOrld that has Banks from most of the COuntries in the world... So you can have all our intenational transactions made in one country.

Anyways I would stick to the two first answers

Good luck

because if the ships are small enough to go threw the canal then it saves them approxomatly 7000 miles.from going around the cape .when they need to dock on the west coast!of the us

transport large amounts of cargo from east to west and west to east faster than most other methods.
