Officially, it takes 8 hours. But it can take longer, depending on the traffic.

It depends upon the traffic in and around the canal. Each ship has a time to approach the locks to start through the canal. So a ship may sit for an hour or two awaiting its turn. Then it may take an hour to pass through the first lock. Then if there are other ships in the canal, which there usually are, you ship cannot go very fast as many are huge cargo ships. Then when the ships get to the other end each has to await its turn to go through the locks again. So it can take all day to transit the entire length. |

The tourist ferry takes anywhere from 8 to 12 hours, depending on how may commercial ship traffic there is at the time. But the view and surroundings are so beautiful, that time flies. |

It depends in a lot of factors IT is between 8 and 12 hours...Sometimes ther is traffic, sometimes there are minor incidents that delay the process such as the boat hitting one of the walls, things like that...
