$1 is $1. I was there this past summer. They no longer use Colones. Believe me, I spent 4 hours with a bucket of hot tamales on my head yelling "vendo tamales de pollo cinco por un dollar". I was on a missions trip and we were raising money for the local kids. |

El salvador used to have the money called "Colon" but since january 1, 2001 the dollar became the most principal money in circulation. The value of $1 in colones is 8.75. This quantity was assigned and never go high or low to this number, always will be 8.75 its value. |

El Salvador uses the US dollar for normal exchanges. In terms of buying power gas and some imports are a bit more expensive than in the usa but in terms of food, hotels, entertainment it is very inexpensive by us standards. I would say that a good meal may be half the price of a similar meal in the USA when eating out. Hotels may be of lower quality but can be very inexpensive <15-20$ to up to similar prices in the usa (and comparable quality). Electronics, clothes are of similar prices compared to the USA but handcrafts are often extremely cheap. |
