How much spending money to bring to Costa Rica? |
Hello!
I am traveling for the first time to Costa Rica Feb and March. I am traveling alone, looking to get away from new york city life and , staying in Puerto Viejo and Montezuma. My flight and places are already paid for.
I am wondering how much money should I plan to have as petty spending cash when down there? (food, going out, busses)
For the most part ill be chilling, and writing, surf board rental, and cooking at home (so groceries expenses) then i probably go mingle for dinner and drinks 2-3 times a week. But nothing too crazy, this is more of a mild chill get away for me.
so for 2 months whats a decent amount of spending money to have saved up? |

If you are going for two months, I would bring about $2000 spending money. I know some are going to disagree, but there may be things you want to do beside surfing, dinning out and having a few drinks.
Two month is a long time to just chill on the beach. You may want to chill by going sports fishing for a day, do a few days of ziplining, take a full day of white water rafting and many other adventures that cost. The problem (a good problem) of CR is there is just a ton of things to do, so be prepared.
The last thing you want is to be down there and run out of money. |

I've been there twice, and everything is actually pretty cheap, i would say at least 1,000 dolllars, but i really couldn't tell you the exact, that's just an estimate on how much i spent, i also have family there and stayed for free and went with my 2 kids, so it might have cost a little more for me, but i basicly only paid for some little things for my kids, a few hotel stays, a saprisa soccer game, we went to alot of beaches, it's really a great country.

what airport are you arriving at?.....SJO?....just curious......google Amigos de la Aves......if you land at SJO...you're in Alajuela...you should take their tour....as for how much money to bring...sounds like you won't need much..$500 would probably do you....it should be enough for a couple of tours too.......one more thing--your bank debit card will work here |

i have stayed in Puerto Viejo three times now. Its difficulty to eat out for less than ten dollars a meal. If you do find a thrifty place to eat take a glance in the kitchen and see if you would still eat there. I have personally noticed that the smallest places give the the dishes nothing more then a rinse in cold water and have insects crawling around. Clothing for sale is not cheap either. This is one of the most expensive places i have stayed in the area as far as day to day costs go. When your buying your own food to cook expect to pay nearly double what your used to paying in the united states. Buses are fairly cheap however check how much they expect you to pay before you go sit down. If you buy and eat food that the locals would commonly use it will be much cheaper (rice, chicken). It would be hard to say exactly how much a person would need for that length of time, there are banks and atms in Puerto Viejo. If you were very thrifty and purchased only food to cook for yourself you might be able to get away with about ten dollars a day (no sodas or snacks). Hit the biggers stores as the convienience stores can be more pricey. Again this is eating as the locals do. |
