How safe is San Jose for two females?

My friend and I (both aged 29) are considering spending a couple of days in the city before heading north. Is it a good idea?

Why would you want to go to San José? I would not recommend it. There is a lot of crime and is specially dangerous for two females. If you do go, never wear golden jewelry, hold on to your purses (or better, belly bags), be very aware of your surroundings, be careful with men that you meet at bars and anywhere, be careful when you take a taxi or when you drive. Go back to your hotel by midnight. Really, it's better if you head north right away.

You are talking about San Jose, Costa Rica in Central america. Costa Rica is one of the safest countries in Latin America. Much of it's income comes from tourists. Generally people are friendly and tourist oriented. It is pretty safe to walk around the city almost everywhere during the day. I would take precautions with cameras and money. During the night, if you are hanging out in a disco, bar, mall, tourist site you will be pretty safe. Try to avoid walking in downtown San Jose after 10 pm. It is not necesarilly unsafe, and you will see that everything is bustling even after 12:00 but you need to take your precautions.

San Jose is full of tourists of every nationality and the government has taken steps to keep them as safe as possible.

So I'm pretty sure you will be safe if you use common sense and do not intentionally put yourselves in harms way.

Costa Rica is a fun country to visit, nigthlife is great and there are tons of things to do during the day.

chances are 100% safe if your ugly 50/50 if one of you are ugly and 10% if your both hot...hot that helps San Jose they say is the horniest north American city

Will I don't know it is safe in San San Jose. I am an American vacationing in Costa Rica. Peaople is very nice, the worst thing can happen is get robb. Yes stay away at night. travel during the days. If you need friend here, i sure can have friend. i am here with my parient for house hunting and business. We are from San Diago, CA. USA. will be here for two week. their are lot of american here.

Not to safe if you like to wear gold jewelry, diamond ring, expenses sunglasses, or carry a large sum of cash. Believe me, I am from CR.

If it's San Jose Ibiza you're talking about, and you're heading north, it's definitely not a good idea. Sant Josep is safe enough, but no-one's safe in San Antonio.

I do not know where you are from but heres my view:
I have lived in various countries, traveled through most of the US, been to Europe several times, visited all of central america and can HONESTLY tell you its SAFE, even if you were traveling alone. Safer than the big metropolis in the US and Europe ( ie. London, Paris, Madrid, New York, Chicago, Philly, Miami), this is no understatement or unbased view, costa rica is a beautiful peaceful country lots of times refered to as the central american switzerland. Like any city in the world there are parts a tourist, or a local should avoid, and yes there are muggings like any other city in the world. BUT thanks to the high level of education of the country, if you dont believe me check the web or an almanaque, everything is pretty safe, policemen are respectful, tourists and americans are in no danger due to "political problems" and people are generally polite and respectful.
So go on, have no fear just be careful as you would in any trip, ask where the bad parts of town might be, how easy it is to get transportation in certain parts of the city, etc. Just to as they say in CR, es mejor prevenir que lamentar (better be safe than sorry). I am sure you will love the country so much there is a HUGE chance that you could stay a while or for life.

On another topic, my sister owns an all Female Surf Camp near Jaco Beach, specifically in playa Hermosa. Its very fun, if you want more info log on to http://www.wavescr.com/ or contact me at alc@david.intertel.hn id be glad to help. Either way go and have a great time.

i dont know what San Jose ur talking about but even though i dont know choose wisely and have a kick @$$ time doing so

?
San Jose is like any other big city. SOme places are very safe and some places are not. Be aware of your surrondings. Do not wear jewelery. stay together. a group is better. Costa Rica is one of the most beautiful places on earth. Most people are very friendly and helpful. To realy experience Costa Rica, get out of san jose and and head to the coast, either East or West is 3 hours away. Stay in a motel that charges extra for hot water and AC and experience and enjoy the people. Just got back a couple of weeks ago and am planning another trip within the next month. Love it there.
