How safe is costa rica?

I am going on a trip to costa rica with my environmental club. i went there with the club two years ago as well and everything went fine, but my dad is soo paranoid about me going. he was the last time too. he refuses to help me pay for it because he says that it is not safe and there are so many people there who just want to steal your money and abduct you.. i think that there is a certain danger anywhere you go, even here in the US, and he is just overreacting. I know how to keep myself safe, and i am very aware of the fact that there are bad people out there.

opinions please?

I'm from Costa Rica, and i go there every summer.

It usually depends where you are to tell whether it's safe. The unsafest part is in the city, like San Jose. There is a lot of crimes and theft there. But in more open spaces, like in certain farms and more private places it is safer.
If you go to beaches, it might not be safe, because i've heard of a lot of robbery in some beach houses.

However, I'm sure that you will be safe with your environmental club, and i have to say that i disagree with your dad about people wanting to just abduct you.. i'm almost certain that won't happen if you're with your group.

Basically, it's like the US, you never know what can happen. Just take the same precautions you take here.

Hope i helped! And im really jealous that you're going with you're environmental club! i really want to do that! haha :]

If you are going with your club, then there is definately going to be adults there with you and probably a tour guide. I ve been there for 3 weeks and i never once felt in danger. We travelled all over.

Costa Rica is extremely safe. The biggest concern you should have is theft. Violent crime rates are very very low. It's safer in Costa Rica than it is in the US.

Just do the common sense thing and don't flash wads of cash, stay out of bad areas, don't wander around at night in areas you aren't familiar with, don't walk around with a Rolex Watch, etc.

Especially since you are going with a club, you will be really safe. I'm not aware of any abductions and I'd be pretty shocked if it were true. This isn't Tijuana. This is a nice country with nice people. Your dads concerns are not warranted.
