How safe is it to travel to Guatemala today?

What health and safety precautions should I take when I go there next summer? I'll be volunteering in a small Mayan village.

I go there twice a year. Just watch out with money, and never hope a cab from the street, get one from the airport or have the hotel call you one.

If you are going as part of a volunteer group, not to worry. The safety precautions will be taken care of for you. Check with your doctor about what vaccinations you may need before you go (there is no malaria vaccine, yet), use common sense about the water and washing raw fruits and veggies before eating, and just enjoy yourself. You will find the people you are going to help are are some of the friendliest and most helpful you will ever see.

As for safety risk I'm assuming is a poor and remote village so I guess you will be ok. As for healthy risk do not eat the following, if you avoid the following you will be ok:

*Do not eat diaries: cream. cheese, milk, yogurt, etc That was produced there only eat it if it was manufactured in a plan and come in a package.

*If you are going to eat fruit (I recomend that you do it is really tasty and good), make sure you prepare it your self. This villages lack a lot services (water, light,) and education so they hardly wash their hands or freuits & vegetebles.

If you can give me the following info I can help you more: Department where the village is located (this would be like the STATE in the US) and the name of the village.

Hepatitis vaccine is a good idea, also might want to look into Malaria pills, especially if you'll be living in a village. In some areas it is fairly dangerous; in Guatemala city for example there are areas that are so dangerous you should not even walk down the street. There are also armed banditos that will run you off the road and rob you. As long as you're careful though it's not too bad, especially in the remote areas like a village it's fairly safe and the locals are all friendly. Check the department of state's travel advisory's for more detailed info (travel.state.gov)

Anywhere you travel there are risks. As far as health risks go ask your doctor. Maybe need a Malaria Vaccine before going. Just be vigilant and keep your eyes open. Guatemala is a good friendly Country and the Mayan people very friendly and warm. Stay out of local politics and things that you do not understand. Learn to Speak Spanish would be very helpful.
