How should I plan on getting from Cusco, Peru to Puerto Maldonado, Peru?

Hi, I am planning a trip where I fly into Cusco, visit Machu Picchu, and then I want to head over to Puerto Maldonado. The airline, Lan is charging about $400 a person, though it's only a 55 min. flight. I have had a lot of trouble finding other airlines to do it, but read that all domestic southAmerican flights are pricey. So, I'm looking into buses but am having trouble finding working websites, and buses that make that journey. Any help would be much appreciated.

Your right, domestic travel by air in SA is pricey. So go for buses.

You won't find websites for South American bus companies but they are very affordable and reliable. I bused across Peru (South to North) for around $60 total. Just get to Cusco and the hotel or hostel will tell you where to go to catch a bus. It sounds way more daunting than it is. Good luck! And stay at Loki.

You're right about the cost of flights from Lima to Cusco. It's actually more expensive than a flight with LAN to Santiago which is 4 hours. It's better anyway, to make your way to Cusco overland if you can because the altitude difference will probably get to you and ruin your visit as it did mine.

Try South American Explorers' club site http://www.saexplorers.org/club/home

I have used the bus company Cruz del Sur while in Peru. I have good luck with them. The trips I took were over 200 miles each way and cost $40 round trip. This company does have a website. Google it.

so, LAN charges what they want because they have almost a monopoly in Peru, specially to Cusco. There is only one other airline that goes to cusco twice a week, one flight, it is TACA and the price is around 150 bucks.
Going by land takes (Lima - Cusco) around 20 to 24 hours, (and of course there are NOT everyday robberies as some stupid says), and Cusco to Pto Maldonado is around the same time (some 500 Km in very beautiful but difficult forest and jungle sight seeings), so, if you have the time, make it by land because landscapes are quite nice, but remember that going and coming back will take you four long days.

I would recommend you travel by Air, it is safer although pricier. It may be cheaper to fly from Lima to Puerto Maldonado though.

Traveling by Bus in Peru is a risk. There are many assaults every day, especially on cheap buses. So although you may get a bargain you also risk your safety.

If you must travel by bus, make sure you do so on a trusted bus line that makes NO STOPS. I don't know of many from Cuzco to Puerto Maldonado but a couple respected bus lines are Ittsa or Oltursa.

Avoid Ormeno, Civa or any other cheap priced buses.
