there is a website called kayak.com

you don't book your flights there, but you find out which site has the least expensive flights

liberia has maybe 2 or 3 nonstop flights from the USA. i think atlanta, miami and maybe one more?

otherwise you go to san jose and take a LONG ride to liberia and even farther to the coast.

you can rent a car in liberia and go to the coast from there, or rent a larger vehicle to go to monteverde, rincon de la vieja and the volcan.

a package deal...well, check out a local agency that specialized in latin america/costa rica. go on line or to the yellow pages. the person at the agency should give you lots of information, but may not be happy if you use them for info and do not book with them

also in monteverde, i stayed at "freddys" place and also next door to him i also stayed (i think they are johovas witness or something if that helps you ID them..... both places are well worth it even thought they are rustic.

OK not 3 stars, but not too many are THAT fancy in monteverde.

You really haven't provided enough information to work with.You could be coming from a hundred different cities in North America or even Europe.
That fact aside,this should not be a difficult thing to do.Personally, I would do the two things separately,for several reasons which I wont even go into.First find your best price on round trip airfare for your family.Contrary to popular belief the airlines themselves often have the best prices. Liberia is the closest airport to Guanacaste.Once you have the airfare and arrival time locked in you can find a hotel in your price range and area you want to be in.You can call or email the hotels directly.
I have been traveling in Mexico,Central and South America for years and have only made a hotel reservation once in my life and it was only because I was arriving in Mexico City at 2am.with young kids Transportation is usually not difficult to arrange through the hotel. At the very least, they can give you suggestions/alternatives.Anything you do independently should save you money.If you still think you need some kind of "travel package" you can try Orbitz ,Travelocity,and Kayak.
