Chavez is the president, and he was recently in the news for calling President Bush "the devil."

Chavez was advocating a Noam Chomsky book - I think it was "Manufacturing Consent." Chomsky was a famous linguistics scholar and writer about politics.

Chavez also offered to sell oil and much discounted prices to people in need in the US, including Alaska Natives in isolated villages.

Part of his offer is a critique on the Bush administration for not doing enough for his own people.

The most important person of Venezuela's history was Simon Bolivar "The Liberator", who set Venezuela (and Colombia, Peru, Bolivia and Ecuador) free from the Spanish back in the 18th century. The national currency is named after him, and there's a state, a city and numerous streets named Bolivar.
Don't mention Chavez, please. He's destroying the country right now.
The "Joropo" is the traditional music, with many variations along the territory. For further information, I recommend you navigate a little.

This is the kind of topic where the old fashioned encyclopedia excels. Look it up in Encyclopedia Britannica in your school library (Americana will also have info if that's whats in you school library)
