It depends on how long you are going there for.Definately take your Passport, US Dollars or Travellers cheques, sunscreen, mosquito repellant and shorts.I wouldn't take any valuable items that aren't necessay like Jewellery as in some places the crime rate is quite high (like in San Jose).
To sum it up, Costa Rica is Cheap (Suprisingly clothes aren't though!),warm all year round,Transport is cheap and everywhere, very diverse (i found it was more cultural in the Southern areas like San Vito), people are very helpful and friendly and it's not a huugggee country (so it gives you time to travel everywhere in a short amount of time).I was there for a year and was mugged once-walking down a side st in San Jose at 11pm...not good! You have to be careful though as a lot of Taxi Drivers are Rip offs! Try and blend in as much as you can,in Costa Rica hardly anyone has Blonde hair or coloured eyes so Tourists stand out! Its funny cos im from New Zealand and use to get called "Gringa" (American Girl) all the time.It felt good when i mentioned im not from there and they were quite surprised. There are a lot of Americans that live there. After 6 months i began to speak fluent spanish and looked + sounded like a "Tica" which helped.
I lived in San Jose and San Vito-2 very different cities and went on holiday almost every month. You have to go to "Tamarindo" located in the North of C.R.Its an amazing little township with soo much to do on the coast.
Have fun!!! |

If you like to go a little crazy, head to Jaco (if you have time). It's a party all day and night. Check it out: |

Go to the coast, Pacific or Caribbean. You will have wonderful adventures and lots of fun and sun. Oh! Are you coming during the next three months? If you are, bring some rain gear. This is the worst part of the rainy season. It will rain every day, although not the whole day, until the end of November. If you are out and about, pack some dry clothing in your backpack. You will go out without a cloud in the sky, and in an hour you will be in the middle of the most unbelievable downpour.
If you don't mind the rain, then there's lots and lots to do. Go the national tourism website and the TicosLand directory for more information about Costa Rica. |

On my web page I have a whole section on traveling tips to Costa Rica
http://www.costaricanativa.com/travelers_tips/costa_rica_travel_tips.htm
Here is a small section on clothes
Costa Rica Travel Tips ... What you need to bring with you...
Long-sleeved shirt, long pants, and a hat to wear while outside whenever possible, to prevent illnesses carried by insects (e.g., malaria, dengue, and leishmaniasis).
Bed nets impregnated with permethrin. (Can be purchased in camping or military supply stores. Overseas, permethrin or another insecticide, deltamethrin, may be purchased to treat bed nets and clothes.)
Flying-insect spray or mosquito coils to help clear rooms of mosquitoes. The product should contain a pyrethroid insecticide; these insecticides quickly kill flying insects, including mosquitoes.
Over-the-counter antidiarrheal medicine to take if you have diarrhea.
Iodine tablets and water filters to purify water if bottled water is not available. See Do’s above for more details about water filters.
Sunblock, sunglasses, hat.
Prescription medications: make sure you have enough to last during your trip, as well as a copy of the prescription(s).
I`ve a trip advisor for a long time, and as far as places to see it depends on how long you are staying here, your daily budget, so on. I would need more information to help you out with that. If you want help talk to me at my online chat http://www.costaricanativa.com/index.html |
