I'm going to Peru: Cuzco and Machu Picchu...is the water in these areas safe to drink?

And brush your teeth with? I've heard that even the water that is bottled in Peru can be bad...

No, the water is not safe to drink. You can buy bottled water pretty much anywhere and there are people that sell you water along the way if you are climbing Machu Picchu. Some people on my trek brought with them tablets to put in to the water that makes it drinkable but you usually have to wait a while before you can drink it. My guide was a Peruvian and he even got very sick from the water in Peru and nearly died. So please don't believe anyone who says it is ok to drink.
Hope this info helps.

Gee... a world traveler like you must realize that the only safe drinking water in many foreign countries is the LOCAL BEER... not only is the water the purest you can find, it has a little alcohol in it which will kill any buggies the water filters missed.

I have traveled all over the world and only gotten sick when I have done something stupid, like eating a delicious tossed green salad that was washed using tap water. I stick to the local beers, which are very mild and not really alcoholic like they are in the U.S and Europe... and have NEVER gotten sick from it.

Of course, when I have suggested this to some of these stupid church groups, they protest about drinking... gasp... BEER... until the fist time they are laying on their bed curled up wanting to die.. and THEN they listen to me.

Use bottled water
To say that even the bottled water is not safe is hypocondriac

You want to stay away from tap water in Peru. It's full of bacteria and things our bodies aren't immuned to. Stay away from fresh vegetables, and chica, those are bound to get you sick! The bottled water is fine there, you just need purified water. You can't use tap water even for brushing your teeth- i know, it's hard!
