I'm planning a trip to Peru, what places should I visit?

This is the trip I did once (1997). It was great:

1. Land in Lima.
2. Get a plane to Juliaca and a bus to Puno.
3. There, you can go for a whole day ride on the Lake Titicaca. Amazing floating islands, full of friendly locals...The altitude is very high there, so be prepared for altitude sickness. Talk to your doctor how to protect yourself with prophylactic meds. (I say this as a pure precaution, I had no problems. I also assume you are young and healthy).
4. From Juliaca, take a plane to Cuzco.
5. Explore Cuzco.
6. Take a train (or hike the Inca Trail if you up for a 5 day adventure) to Machu Picchu. A visit there is an absolute must, of course.
7. Come back to Lima.

Other possible attractions:
Arequipa with Canion Colca (where you can see the condors)
Iquitos in the Amazon.

Have fun!

this is what i did. I went to peru during inti rayme (a cultural spectacle look it up. it can get crowded.) stayed in cuzco to see it. went by bus to machu pichu and stayed in aguas calientes.

Of course, you should go to Cusco, Macchu Picchu and Lake Titicaca.

However you also should not miss Arequipa, which is a beautiful town in the shadow of a volcano.

Lima, Miraflores, Machu Pichu, Cuzco, Piura, Arequipa, Iquitos. The churches/cathedrals, archeology and history museums. University of Lima. Beaches.

Best place to stay in Lima: JW Marriot in Miraflores. Spectacular view of the the city.

Don't forget your camera...many photo opportunities! enjoy!
