First, I am so excited for you! I went there about a year ago for a little over a week and had a blast!
Look into these places:
The Cloud Forest in Monteverde
San Jose, even though it's a big city, it's actually pretty neat
The Arenal volcano is amazing too! Normally you can't see the peak but when I was there we could, and it was incredible.
Manuel Antonio is a beautiful beach! There is a tour that you can take, I would suggest paying for a tour guide. With a guide you can see all sorts of monkeys, sloths, and bats. It's pretty neat!
That is all I can think of right now, but I know there is more!

On the Pacific coast the places to go are:
• Playa Conchal
• Mal Pais
• Playa Tambor
On the Caribbean side go to:
• Puerto Viejo (only if you are traveling with a companion), you will be just fine.

If you are interested in volcanoes then visit Volcan Arenal and stay over night, you can see the lava flowing down the side of the volcano (pretty cool stuff) OR the Irazu and Poas volcanoes, they are not as dramatic, but you will see a volcano crater as near as you can ever be.

In San Jose – do NOT waist any time – not much to see or do.
Hotels to stay in San Jose:
• Gran Hotel Costa Rica – Will put on the middle of all the action
