It is a great idea. All I ever hear about Guatemala is complaints about the crime. Use common sense and you will be fine. Try to plan your trip to cut down on traveling back and forth. Getting places takes a little while, but once you get there you won't be disappointed. Find somewhere to stay on Lake Atitlan, I've stayed in San Lucas Toliman and Panajachel, both are beautiful. I believe that Semuc Champey, about an hour from Coban, is a must see on your trip. There isn't much to do there but it is beautiful. It takes several hours to get to it, but once you are there, you'll love it. If you want to go to Tikal, You can fly out of Guatemala City for about $130.00. I found Lago Izabel a beautiful lake. I stopped in a small town and rented an innertube for my kids from a local boy who charges $1.00 for the day. It's hard to find a place that is as beautiful and inexpensive as Guatemala.

good idea? It's the best you've had :)

Tikal - huge Mayan ruins in the middle of the jungle
Lake Atitlan - beautiful lake with 2 volcanoes on the background
Rio Dulce - super trip to livingston on this river sorrounded by 2 walls of vegetation, once in Livingston u can experience the caribbean culture.
Acatenango - I just climbed this active volcano and it is breathtaking.
Antigua - Colonial city filled with spanish schools, salsa schools, it's the homebase for backpackers travelling the country.
I love this country.

Hi! The most popular places are:

La Antigua Guatemala, founded in 1543. La Antigua Guatemala was once upon a time the third most important Spaniard colony in America, ruling over what is now southern Mexico and all of Central America. You can visit La Merced Church, Cathedral and San Francisco Church.

Pacaya Volcano. This volcano provides a constant show of ash clouds and lava flow.

Guatemala´s Caribbean coast is an exciting blend of tropical forest, mangroves an incredible, sunsets, all topped off with the spice of the Garifuna culture. You can visit to Quirigua, one of the most important sites in Guatemala. Located in the Izabal Banana Plantation, it reached its peak of importance between 500 and 850 A.D.

Chichicastenango Market and Santo Tomás Church. The market days are Thursday and Sundays, offer by far the most impressive sights to visitors.

Tikal, Heart of the Mayan World.

Atitlan, the most beautiful lake of the world.

Welcome to Guatemala. Enjoy your trip.

I personally would deviate from the plan; Guatemala, Nicaragua, and Honduras are pretty dangerous countries. Why not go to the rainforests in Belize, the great Panama Canal, or my favourite, the great volcanoes in Costa Rica (not to mention the exotic beaches, the virgin rainforests, and the best scuba diving in the world).

I was a Peace Corps volunteer in the rural highlands of Guatemala and return every year. You can take the tourist rack suggested by the others; I especially was entrhalled by Semuc Champey. Pick up the "Rough Guide"- by far the best.

If you are interested in out-of-the way, more uncommon places, feel free to contact me for alternative ideas to the tourist locales. Also tips for traveling through the country, etc. What are you interested in seeing/ doing?
