I am going to Bogota for 1 week in April, is it a safe area of Colombia?

Is it right to assume that as with any city, if I don't go looking for dangerous situations I will be safe in this city?

I want to enjoy the nightlife and restaurants without experiencing any trouble. Is this a reasonable request?

It's as safe as ANY big city in the world. You have to be careful where you go and who you talk to.

Have a nice stay, you'll like it.

Bogota certainly has much more to offer as opposed to competing cities like Cali or Medellin.

Things have become much better than the last time I was there. I am actually quite impressed. I saw a great number of tourists there last time I went.

I have not encountered any sort of danger, but then I again, I use common sense to stay out of danger.

The southern-most part of Bogota should be avoided, that's where you'll find the largest slums. If you are staying at a hotel, chances are you'll be in the North anyway.

Never hang out on your own, as a local would tell you where not to go, and so on.

Only the Southern part of the city is particularly dangerous. However, if you are out at night you should ask the restaurant or bar you are in to call you a cab--you should not flag them down in the street. It is also a good practice in the day time.

Bogotá is as safe as any major city in the US. I prefer Cali myself.

I haven't been there yet but my husband is from there and his family is still there in the Kennedy section of Bogota from what I understand is midlde class...

I believe it is like NYC and that you are correct to say that you will be ok if you treat it as such and dont go looking for dangerous situations.

You should visit www.colombianblog.com you can get better advise there.

Have fun! :-)
