I was in Machu Pichu in 2006, and it is a very nice place to visit. One common misconception is that Machu Pichu is located in Cusco. It is not, Machu Pichu is about 50 miles from the city of Cusco.

Many will tell you that you can go by land on a bus, while this is true you are also subjecting yourself to a 24 hour bus ride going through terrain. If you have a fear of heights or fear of small spaces, I would not recommend going by bus to Cusco from Lima. Save up some extra cash and take LAN Air. You'll be glad you did when you see the terrains from the sky.

Cusco is generally safer than Lima, but you should still be cautious and only trust licensed tourists to book your visit to Machu Pichu.

When you get to Cusco, take it easy and don't try to rush anywhere. Many of the managers in hotels or hostels in the area will give you total hospitality. I stayed at this hostel http://www.samaywasiperu.com/

It is very nice, very clean, very safe, affordable and close to the tourist areas of historic Cusco.

I recommend that once you get to your hotel/hostel to sit back enjoy the atmosphere and drink the traditional coca tea (don't worry you will not get a high)

Also, don't wear flip flops to Machu Pichu. You will be trekking up the side of a mountain and your feet can hit rocks and make it uncomfortable for you.

Enjoy it.

I guess you will be setting off from Lima which is pretty much sea level. Try not to ascend too quickly. If you fly from Lima to Cusco, you're more likely to succumb to altitude sickness. If you get the choice, travel overland and do it over several days.

Antiseptic hand wipes are useful because, even if you can get to a cold water washroom before you eat, you may have to dry your hands on a damp towel with an unknown pedigree.

Look up every thing you need to know on the Lonely Planet website or buy one of their books. Get in good shape . You are going to do some trekking . Take rain gear . Learn some Spanish it will help. Get ready to eat some little ginny pigs. You will like them .
