Santiago is really several cities in one.
In the old downtown area you could go see La Moneda, the Presidential Palace. This is where Salvador Allende was killed during a military coupe. He is the world's only communist president elected through the democratic process. Cerro Santa LucĂa is a beautiful park in the downtown area. If you like old Catholic cathedrals there is one by the Plaza de Armas. If you like archeology there is an interesting museum in the Metro station under the plaza. A ride up the funicular (vertical cable car) will take you to the top of Cerro San CristĂłbal where you can see almost the entire city -- that is, if it is not too smoggy, a typical condition this time of year.

You should also go to the Barrio Alto. This includes the Providencia and Las Condes areas. There you will see beautiful modern architecture and well landscaped affluent neighborhoods.

If you like soccer try to catch a game in Chile.

In the northern part of Chile there is an interesting National Park called San Pedro de Atacama where you will find geysers and vast salt flats. If you like big holes in the ground go to Chuquicamata. That is the world's largest copper mine. Both of these northern sights are very remote unless you can fly there. If you don't like deserts don't go to the North. It’s the driest place on earth.

By contrast, the South is very wet and green. It is a beautiful area with lots of lakes and snow-capped mountains. Farther south there are glaciers. I would not recommend going too far south this time of year as it is currently winter.

Viña del Mar is a splendid costal city about 1.5 hours west of Santiago. The climate there is usually nice year round.

Be sure to try some empanadas. They are very tasty. Try different types. They can either be fried or baked. “Empanadas de pino” are filled with beef, either hamburger or small pieces of roast and onions. Empanadas de queso are filled with cheese. There are also empanadas with seafood in them. If you like avocado order your sandwiches with "palta". If you like wine Chile has some of the finest in the world. For something different try some “pisco sour”

I hope you enjoy your short stay In Chile. Public transportation is very well developed and taxis are not expensive. Inter city buses are clean, comfortable and very economical. I think you will find that "chilenos" are beautiful, friendly, well-educated people.

just Santiago?
try other places since you're going to Chile, like the route of wine, San Pedro de Atacama, limari's valley. how many people are traveling with you?. it's also relative to how much money are you willing to spend.

Well, you should definitely go to a Chilean restaurant and have some fish and wine, if you have time try to see the museum or the national library, you can also go shopping to the mall ("Alto las condes" mall is really cool). And if you can I would really recomend to go to Vina del mar, it's about 1,5 hour from Santiago (you can take a bus) and it's beautiful... Enjoy my home country!!!

Take a ride up the Andes, we did and it was a day trip. Vino del Mar and Valperaso were fun too(day trips)

Definitely go to Vina and Valparaiso if you can (check for hostel called Casa Aventura- address pasaje galvez 11. Number is (56)(32)75 59 63. email casatur@ctcinternet.cl Very cheap and very nice with a great breakfast provided.) Also, the lakes near Pucon are like nothing you have ever seen- clear as glass. The empanada advice is a must, but if you get them with fish they can be a little grainy. Go to clubs (DEFINITELY) and get piscola- it's pisco with pepsi usually. It depends on the kind of stuff you like and how much dinero you got. The Riviera hotel is great in santiago- but we stayed at the top. (You have spectacular views all around.)
have a lot of fun and see as much as possible.
