I am planning a vacation to Costa Rico in June is it better to take a tour or go on your own?

I would like to see the rain forest, waterfalls, and the volcano and I am on a limited budget

The bus service in Costa Rico is excellent. It is quite easy to go on your own, but you do have to be very careful with your luggage. I spent 3 weeks there on my own. I spent a lot of time in Monteverde and in the high mountains, in the lowland forests of the east and down on the Panama border. The taxis will take you anywhere you want to go locally for a not unreasonable fee. And they will come and pick you up. We were in Monteverde for a week and had the same taxi driver drive us everywhere. Costa Rico is not expensive and a great place to visit on a budget. The bus terminals are not bad except for the one in San Jose. It is somewhat intimidating and it is difficult there to find the right bus if you do not speak Spanish, but it is managable if you give yourself sufficient time. Also the taxi drivers in San Jose are somewhat less than honest. If the driver will not turn on the meter, get out immediately and find another. Also there are many non-taxi taxis who will try to get your business. Avoid them. Be sure to get a copy of Lonely Planet Costa Rico to take with you. Invaluable.

Ok, its Costa Rica and San José, now if its your first time and you would like to go on your own you must know of course that its gonna be hard, language barrier, directions, everything although it would be a great experience. If you get a tour it will be easier but there's not much of an adventure in it. Depending in which you decided just take the correspondent measurements.

On a limited budget it is certainly better to go on your own to Costa Rica. Budget travel in Costa Rica is quite feasible. June is an excellent time for eco-tourism. Just check out Costa Rica sites to find good activities and things to do in Costa Rica like

I would suggest an organised trip. You will have a good idea of your total costs. The downside to this,(as I found out) is that you may not stay long enough at any one place, to see all of the animals/sights that you wanted to see.

go on your own

There is not the same degree of personal safety in CR as in UK. The out of town areas are better, but San Juan is not very safe at night.

you should never get a tour, always explore on your own.
