I am traveling in peru and am taking a bus from lima to cuzco. Is this safe and does anybody know a good bus?

Additional Details
Thanks for all the good advice. If I take a bus where should I buy the ticket? It seems on line to be very expensive.

Mrs. Obama rules!
Why go by bus when you can fly for as low as 50 dollars? There are several flight to Cuzco everyday and they are very safe (Lan, Aerocondor, etc) However, if you are going by bus (which is not very safe due to the highlands terrain) use OrmeƱo which is simply the best.

Please fly to Cusco, you have Lan, Taca, Aero Condor, it's not that expensive and it's only 1 hr flight compared to the HOURS of bus ride!

Have a safe trip!

I do not recommend you to travel by bus. There are bands that assault buses and steal the passengers bags. Besides every week you will find in the peruvian newspapers the latest bus accident with the list of casualties. Most highways are in bad condition and bus drivers usually work over the legal working time limit.
The Ministry of Transportations has published a ranking of bus companies with the most accidents:

http://www.mtc.gob.pe/portal/formato_comunicado_MTC.pdf

I recommend you to travel by plane.

When I was travelling there, the bus was not exactly well known for safety, although it wasn't completely horrible either. In either case, I ended up taking an airplane between Cuzco and Lima because of time constraints, and it wasn't too expensive at all. The actual price wouldn't be helpful to you because it was several years ago, but I know that option is still available to travellers and not out of the backpacker's price range.

Suerte!

Hi! Maybe it's not the best idea, but if you have already made your decision just go ahead and be awake all the time, focus on your trip that's the only important thing. There are some good bus companies like OrmeƱo, Cruz del Sur, CIVA, Oltursa.
Another thing that you should know is about money, try to use local money (soles), and US dollars, it would be the best if you use cash, and if you need to change money do it on banks or casas de cambio, not with the street vendors you can be cheated.

I don't think you want to take a bus! The roads are dangerous, and in a bus... When I was in Peru, the best way to get around (for a tourist) is a van. They're the safest thing on the roads of Peru (in Peru, they don't have a speed limit or road rules)!

He, bus travel by itself is pretty safe I would say. Buses of the big bus companies are comfortable and reliable. Check http://www.sabuses.com/index.php?originCity=Lima&destinationCity=Cuzco to get an idea for the prices and schedules of the buses.
Be aware in bus terminals, as they might attract thiefs.

It's a very very long trip from Lima to cuzco, but you'll see a whole lot more than in an airplane. The scenery is overwhelming, once you passed the coast, which is quit boaring.

I have friends who have done this journey by bus and it took forever. The buses are not really reliable in Peru. I took one to the Colca Canyon and the undercarriage froze! Not fun! The internal flights in Peru are not very expensive and will save you hours.

jovi
hi, the best bus to Cusco is Cruz del Sur ,es safe and comfortable.
The bus has bath, TV, attention on board, includes all the eaten ones ... are 18 hours of trip.
Also you can look for a good rate by plane ... in AEROCONDOR or LAN PERU airlines
I wish you a lot of luck and enjoy your trip, if you need some help or information this one is my mail miriam@greatperutravel or miriam _macedo@hotmail.com

No matter where you go you always have to be cautious. See if in this country it would be easy to cash traveler's checks which would be a good idea. But always keep on guard and trust no one unless they are wearing uniform and even with that be cautious. Places like that tend to have a great deal of poverty and people will not mind picking your pockets or worst yet holding you up for cash.

take a plane!! its only like $20 more, and its an hour, versus 24 on a bus

Latina_Rica
Its safe, Lima is the same size as new york and there are more murders in NY than Lima.

That'll be a long frikken busride!
Lima is so unsafe, but Cuzco's better. Watch your bags and don't pick anything off the ground and don't get distracted. You'll be pickpocketed!
Sorry I don't know a bus - I took the plane (which, if you can afford it, was really cool because you fly over the mountains!)
