My fiance are going on our honeymoon in Costa Rica in June. My first thought was ... where did you get those cheap tickets??? LOL we have a hotel and now need tickets!

But we will be staying in Puerto Viejo, in the province of Limon, on the Caribbean side of the country. After MUCH research, we chose this because it is very laid back, they have a ton of things to do, and the hotel is only $500 for a whole week! It's called the Banana Azul, #1 rated on Trip Advisor. We are pumped about the trip - you are right on the beach but also near the rainforest ... and still within walking distance of town. If you're flying into San Jose, it looks to be about 4 - 5 hour drive there. But I think anywhere on the Caribbean side is good - lots of natural beauty, national parks, beaches ... and most people stay on the Pacific side, so it's not AS tourist-y.

Oh, and I forgot to mention that it is a BIG surfing area. I don't surf, but I'm excited to watch others do it.

Have a great trip! Listed below are some hotels/activities in the Puerto Viejo area that seem awesome.

Hi, I love Costa Rica and never make hotel reservations before I go. Online sites overcharge. If you just show up and ask for a room, you're going to get one a lot cheaper. There are a lot out there. My favorite place is Arenal. If you drive to the outskirts of La Fortuna, you can get an awesome hotel for $40 a night, and have an amazing view of Arenal volcano that erupts nightly. It's like nothing I could ever fully desribe. I don't recommend Jaco, it is very American, and more plentiful in prostitutes because of this. Santa Teresa is nice, but a pain to get to. You need to take a ferry from the mani land over to the Nicoya peninsula...I hope this was helpful...sorry, I guess I had a lot to say. :)

kelsy,
come to costa rica and go to santa teresa...
is near mal pais
ain't expensive and is amazing
the red hot chilli peppers go there when they come here, even people like pink and leo decaprio
if not, go to samara or nosara beach
they are south of tamarindo, an hour of the liberia airport
you'll love it

My bad, didnt see your question correctly.... sorry
If you want to learn how to surf go to Tamarindo, its a beach in Guanacaste. Honestly I don't consider it the nicest beach but its definately nice, i'm sure you can find cheap and good surfing lessons there. Also if you want to visit some nice beaches go to Avellanas which is fairly close and its a very nice place to visit and surf too.
Regarding the hotel, in Tamarindo there are many options ranging from really expensive to cheap, so just look around and im sure you can find something that fits your budget. Also if you feel you can get a discount don't be afraid of asking for one, actually I would advice asking for a discount in any hotel you go to! hehehe... In Tamarindo theres supermarket, restaurants and everything you could possibly need, so dont worry about that either.

Hope this helped, and have a nice trip!

La Escuela del Sol - its located in Montezuma and has a surfing school. Lodging is included in the cost if you are interested in formal instruction. I was looking at going there to learn Fire Poi. They also offer Yoga and Spanish lessons. Interesting place.

Your hotel will probably be more than your airfare, the nearest beaches to San José are Puntarenas, Quepos and Jacó.
There are too manybother beautiful beaches to list but Avellanas, Tamarindo, Flamingo, Brasilito, Dominical are some of them.
