It totally depends on your tastes and what you are looking for. As an Americans living abroad I can tell you of many other American who are relocating and either totally happy or totally disillusioned. You will have to do your homework as best as you can through internet research (visa, government, culture, etc)and possibly tourism books then when you think you have narrowed it down to a couple of choices you should take an initial trip for feel and flavor. After you’ve done this you should let it gel a while in your mind, then return to the location of your choice and hang out about three months as a local, if you can afford the down time in your finances. There is a honeymoon period you will need to get past to see if you can live with the warts that are going to show up on the face of your paradise. And believe me even your paradise of choice will have warts.
To begin with it's important to establish you can live as frugally or as extravagantly as you would like in most Latin American nations. Everything will depend on you, what you willing to live with or without. Do you need Green Giant, Sara Lee, Heinz, Kellogg’s, etc? Do you need Armani, Gucci, Polo, etc? Most of these things are usually available and you are going to pay the same price or higher than you would in the US. Remember these are import items it’s a one way trip to get these items into the country. And since there items will be high end without much demands it will be reflected in the pricing.
On the other hand if you can live as the locals do and are content with their native foods and life style (clothing, houseing, etc) you can live on very little.
We chose Panama in our quest and have been here for 11 months. I still am learning how to live life in a different culture. If you are interested in some of the article I have written about the cultural acclamation process see http://www.panamaexpertos.com/
Best of luck in your quest, if you find a shoe that fits you will be very happy, but try as many on as you can before you buy! |

dear asker i was recently checking on some of my answers and well lanicoya is hurt because her an asker and an aswerer got into a dispute well lanicoya lost and im sure is hurt that is why she is attacking el salvador because the asker is salvadorean and was asking wether anybody has been to el salvador or nicaragua and well i dont agree on people just insulting people to try to make your country sound better i would highly suggest you ignore her stupid childish answer and im from nicaragua have lived in both countries and will say el salvador might have its problems but its still better than my country nicaragua its a sad truth but im not goin to lie everytime i go i get depressed just to see how ****** up things are how hard it is to survive and if you would read the el salvador and nicaragua news many nicaraguans leave their country to go work in the fields in costa rica and el salvador because the country has no jobs to offer im saddened to see that many women in my country are turning into prostitutes that get brought to el salvador and guatemala to work as hookers and im talking about my own country i just want to let you know the truth because id be embarrased to tell you yes go to my country and then you get there and your jobless and you end up getting depressed and leave and then youd be very disappointed nicargua has a 60% unemployment rate and over 55% of the population live below poverty things are cheaper there but you dont get much for what its worth nicaragua is the 2nd poorest country in the world it has crime problems right now the main issue is people in taxis are getting pulled out and get robbed and killed managua is very dangerous and the country has gangs not as big or famous as the salvadorean one but lanicoya if you dont know many nicaraguans join the ms 13 and the ms 18 so like you call it nicaraguans are low too they are not leaders but followers so dear asker unless you are rich i wouldnt suggest you goin to nicaragua cuz youll be spending alot of money and wont be making any because we have no jobs you have a better chance in panama, costa rica, and el salvador |

Nicaragua or Costa Rica. You said you want to hang out at the beach and having visted throughout latin america, I personally recommend Nicaragua or Costa Rica for their beaches, warm weather, food, culture, and overall experience. It will be an exhilarating experience for you, guarantee it. You can easily teach English or Spanish, and your contribution is much needed. About Belize... well I have never been there before so I cannot compare, however, from what I have heard and from my own passion and love for Nicaragua... if I were you I would move to Nica. or Costa Rica. For how long will you be moving there for? If it's for a long period of time, please visit these countries. If you are just willing to do some research and travel there and go from there... then best of luck and I hope you have a great experience wherever you go. I'm sure you will use your skills to empower yourself and the people in this newfound community. Good Luck with your trip and planning!! |

Belize is supposed to be nice. If you're certified to teach English, I'd head for South America, myself. |

I like Margarita Island in Venezuela. But then I am partial, since I have been living here for a year. I am not sure if you can make a decent living teaching English.

i read everyones comments and ive visited most of central america except for guatemala and honduras and ill say you should consider el salvador for many obvious reasons ive lived there and im in love with the place and the people... you mention you want to teach you can make more money in costa rica, panama, el salvador those countries pay more and have better living standards nicaragua me and some family i have from nicaragua went there recently and the country is dirt-poor i didnt see anything amazing other than the fact that you have to travel really far to get from one beach to another everything you see in nicaragua youll find in costa rica, panama, belize, and el salvador except in better conditions and alot closer and in nicaragua i hear alot and read about people leaving the country due to the fact that there are no jobs! they all move to costa rica or el salvador and get jobs there when i was in el salvador i met many nicaraguans who moved there 12 years ago when the sadinistas took over and they said they tried moving back there but that they didnt like it and their kids would beg to go back to el salvador and the governtment doesnt really want them there but they made this whole article about nicaraguans begging to stay in el salvador so they can work there and live better and they all say thanks to el salvador they are alive and doing well because in nicaragua its hard to survive and costa rica has over 500,000 of them and they dont want them going in to their country either many costa ricans dislike nicaraguans for some reason they never say why and well you have better chances of better life and survival in belize,el salvador, costa rica and panama good luck to you |

belize along with costa rica and panama are the most expensive countries in central america i would highly recomend el salvador that is were im living now you can rent a place 2 bedrooms kitchen living room etc in san miguel for about $80 garage and backyard included here theres many private or just regular schools universities were you can teach english wich they need and are hiring good english teachers theres also a european school here were they teach every language imaginable spanish and english are the 2 main languages so im sure you wont be job less el salvador provides jobs of all kinds for countries alot poorer than el salvador such as guatemala, honduras and nicaragua here in el salvador we have plenty of beaches for you to enjoy along the pacific coast, if you like islands we have alot of them el cajete, olomega, meanguera, conchagua and many more, if you like surfing we have good waves too, el salvador has 26 volcanoes more volcanoes than any other latin american country its a beautiful sight it has 14 main rivers and hundreds of small ones it also has a rainforest and the tallest mountain in central america it also has many archeological places pyramids etc the food is great the people are nice and its cheap me and my boyfriend live just fine here with no more than $275 a month and thats for 2 people and we do go out alot to the beaches and spend money but we have never spend more than $275 sometimes we spend less than that and we have cable and high-speed internet so youll enjoy it here this place is amazing you wont regret it |

Nicaragua has amazing beaches in the Pacific & Atlantic ocean (best of both worlds) just like Honduras, Costa Rica & Panama. el salvador and belize don't.
Nicaragua also has beautiful colonial cities (Granada and Leon). You mentioned you're not rich, but a dollar goes a very long way there. Costa Rica is the most expensive country in Central America and el salvador has the highest crime (and murder) percentage and not to mention one of the worlds most notorious gang, the MS 13 which have over 100,000 members in their country & the U.S.
In the last 15 years or so, the tourism sector has seen an economic boom, positively affecting the Nicaraguan life and economy. Since 2001, $600 million dollars have been invested in tourism, most of them coming from Nicaraguan investors. The country is mostly famous for its landscapes, flora and fauna, culture, beaches and of course, its lakes and volcanoes.
According to the Ministry of Tourism of Nicaragua, the colonial city of Granada, Nicaragua is the preferred spot for tourists. Also, the cities of Managua, LeĂłn, Masaya, Rivas and the likes of San Juan del Sur, San Juan River, Ometepe, Mombacho Volcano, Corn Island & Little Corn Island, and others are main tourist attractions. In addition, ecotourism and surfing attract many tourists to Nicaragua.
Nicaragua also has the LOWEST crime rate in Central America
Murder rates are a popular measure for a country’s level of violent crime and are more reliable than most, as murders rarely go unreported. The world’s homicide rate is currently estimated at 8.86 per 100,000. Latin America is quite a bit rougher, with an average of 22.9 murders per 100,000 in the region. Most neighbor countries of Nicaragua in Central America are on the upper end of the world’s scale, exactly where the world might expect Nicaragua would be located. Countries like El Salvador at 117 per 100,000, Guatemala at 45 per 100,000 and Honduras at 41 per 100,000. In North America, the US murder rate is 7.1 per 100,000, yet its famously violent cities weigh in at 14.8 per 100,000 for Los Angeles, 21.9 for Chicago, 31.7 for Atlanta, with Washington, D.C. at 41.8 and New Orleans at 43.3. Little Costa Rica, the “oasis of peace”, is at 7.2, the same as the US and significantly safer than most other Central American republics. What about Nicaragua? Nicaragua suffers only 3.4 per 100,000, making it the least violent country in Central America and one of the safest in all the hemisphere.

Mind you, the statistics ARE legit. Google it and convince yourself.
To the ORIGINAL MAN who asked the question. I just wanted to let you know, they are always looking for people to teach English and/or Spanish in smaller towns in Nicaragua. If you're interested for more info just contact me, i have my info on my myspace page.
Oh by the way, if your looking to live somewhere in South America, i HIGHLY recommend Argentina, Chile & Uruguay.
Check out this video of the real estate available in San Juan Del Sur, Nicaragua, and the beach there is AMAZING!
