10. What's the driest place on Earth?
A place called Arica, in Chile, gets just 0.03 inches (0.76 millimeters) of rain per year. At that rate, it would take a century to fill a coffee cup.
Chile as an Astronomical Portal to the Universe
By Katherine Hutter
Chile's clear skies, smooth air flows and Southern Hemisphere vantage point make it one of the most important locations in the world for astronomical observations.
Above Chilean skies are numerous globular clusters and celestial objects unseen or difficult to see in the northern hemisphere, including the Milky Way's "Galactic Bulge" and "Galactic Center" (home to enormous star clusters), the Clouds of Magellan (satellite galaxies of the Milky Way) and the Sagittarius Dwarf, new "small" galaxy that might provide scientists with new information about the formation of galaxies.

Chile Flag vs. Texas Flag
At first glance the Chilean and Texas flags look almost identical. They can be easily confused since they each contain the same elements: a lone star on a blue background and horizontal red and white bands.
Which Flag Came First?
Chile’s flag was born of a storied history and went through several versions before arriving at its current form in October, 1817:

Chupacabras Alive in Chile
There is a famous Latin America myth of the “Chupacabras.” This is a mystical creature that attacks and drinks the blood of goats. It’s name is derived from the Spanish “chupar” meaning “to suck” and “cabra” which is goat. You can read more about this creature on Wikipedia’s Chupacabra page.

Did you know these interesting facts?
Chile claims about 1,250,000 square kilometers of Antarctica, or roughly 9% of its total size, as Chilean territory. They even show the weather forecast for it on the news.
Northern Chile is home to the world's driest desert: Atacama.
Almost half of the country's population lives in or around the capital city Santiago.
Chile's number one export is copper. The world's largest open pit mine is found at Chuquicamata in northern Chile.

Chile Facts:
Chile's coastline stretches 2,700 miles long, running from the Atacama, the world's most arid desert in the north, through forests, valleys, mountains, lakes, glacier fields, the Tierra del Fuego and the Antarctic Circle in the south. Chile is never more than 110 miles wide east to west.
Unlike most of the world, Chile is blessed with natural barriers. The fruit-growing region is protected by the Andes Mountains on the east, the Antarctic ice cap to the south, the Pacific Ocean to the west, and the Atacama Desert to the north.
Chile has a broad spectrum of growing climates. These climactic variations favor diversified production of fruits and prolonged harvest seasons. In the past 16 years, fresh fruit exports from Chile to North America have increased over 700 percent. Chile is the primary wintertime source (over 95 percent) of fresh grapes for the US and Canada.
The Chilean fruit-growing season is opposite that ofthe US., so marketing is complementary rather than competitive.
There are more than 2,00 0 volcanoes in Chile, of which 50 are actually active.
Chile is the second-largest producer of salmon in the world.
Chile provides North America with almost 15 percent of all its fruit sales during the months of November through April.
Soccer is Chile's national sport.
Chile is the home of two Nobel Prize winning poets, Gabriela Mistral(1945), and Pablo Neruda(1971).
David Selkirk, immortalized as Robinson Crusoe, survived a shipwreck and lived for several years on a desert island off the coast of Chile, no doubt thriving on the nutritional benefits of fresh fruit. |

Don't mind some answers which encourage racism, the peruvian guy who wrote that is pathetic and jealous. It happens a lot as the GDP and educational system are of a higher standard than a lot of neighbouring countries. I think you should just ignore any ignorant comments. it is quite common. Check out wikipedia for all the information you need. It is quite accurate on this subject and will give you a lot of information you need. |
