it really does depend on where you're staying, but i would still recommend malaria pills to everyone, i came back with 42 mosquito bites on just one leg, but i was traveling ALL over Costa Rica. i put on mass amounts of deet every day, though. so, I'd get that covered just in case. do bring warm and water proof clothing, not Cotton ( it's to humid and it'll take to long to dry ) and good shoes. tevo's are what I'd recommend. bring a camera, but not to expensive as you may be caught in the rain and ruin it. also, bring small little gifts for the locals, they are so hospitable and warm, we want to keep it that way.

Santa Anna? Malaria drugs are good, but skip Mefloquine (brand name Lariam â„¢ and generic). Depressions and suicides. Sulpha drugs work fine, but see your healthcare provider. I also recommend Twinrix. Plan way ahead, some things take time to get into your system.

It's pretty safe, but avoid remote areas.

Be prepared for quite of bit of rain in the afternoons. You can drink the water and eat the food almost anywhere, you do not need malaria pills unless you are spending time in rural areas near the Panama and Nicaraguan borders. San Jose is not a very pretty city. Costa Rica is a wonderful country and you willhave a good time.

Ditto - be prepard for the rain - it floods most roads. Other answers may vary depending on where in Costa your staying. I ran into a study group staying out in the boonies on a nature hike so if that is where your staying you need to cover all your basic necessities at the least. If your staying at the school, you will probably be close to the city and not need as much.

you may want to get the hep A and B vaccines, especially if your going to spend alot of time in the interior of the country. ask about the twinex inocculation.

change your money to colones, better value than US ussually.

have fun, study hard but make sure to save some time to do some sight seeing. i suggest arenal volcano, monteverde cloud forests, or manuel antonio nat'l park

Miguel Aleman or Jaco are the closest beaches to the central valley. Don't forget the Volcano tours and the Jungle tours. You can go shopping duty free at the Panama border or take a 1-2 day trip north to Nicaragua. The bus from San Jose to Managua is only about 7-8 hours.
