Pacific is the best. For some reason the Caribbean coast of Costa rica is swampy (great for spotting turttles and crocs but not good for a beach day).
The whitest sand I've found was at Manuel Antonio, right outside the national park.

The pacific coast is best. It is a surfer's paradise. From Manuel Antonio to Brasilito the beaches are clean and white sand with beautiful waves in a clean sea. Fly into Liberia-a smaller airpor up north and take a bus to anywhere on the west coast. Really cheap accomodations can be had all along the coast.

Well costa rica doesnt have many torqoise waters but the nicest beach is Conchal, but thats in a resort area and no way you can be a beach bum there.
Manuel Antonio is not that bad, but there are loads of gay hotels.
I just came back from montezuma and its more of a hippie town met a few fellows your age chilling there. And its cheaper. Carribean is rustic, you should check punta uva out.... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F4F7ElDb3Fg
if your here for two months dont just stay in one place!
?
hm....I recommend Pacific....
Guanacaste's beaches are the nicest
Try "conchal" and "playa blanca"...by your description...I'm sure you're gonna like it =)
pd....they are 5-10 minutes away

I've never been down the Caribbean coast but I have been up and down the Pacific Coast. I was most recently in Manuel Antonio. Stunning natural beauty but touristy !!! The previous answer was right on about Playa Conchal . . . AKA Brasilito. I solo traveled there to Melia Playa Conchal, but it is a VERY pricey resort. If I were to go back, I would stay at a hotel called Hotel Brasilito. I can almost guarantee it doesn't have a website or anything like that. It is a very small, charming, sleepy beachfront hotel with very few amenities, only an outdoor bar and some hammocks. It reminded me of something out of a Hemingway novel. Playa Conchal is separated by Brasito by a small outcropping of rocks that jut out into the sea (maybe 50 yards). Anyway, Playa Conchal is about a 5 minute walk from Playa Brasilito literally walking on the sand.
Brasilito is a VERY small town with a soccer field in the middle of it. The natives live in beach front homes that are literally shacks with no plumbing and chickens running around. I have about 100 digital pictures of Brasilito and Playa Conchal. If you want, you can view them on my Kodak Easyshare website. Just email me and I will be happy to share them with you. jaycdub17@yahoo.com

Playa Zancudo is not white white beach but it's a beach bums paradise. You can get a room at SUZY'S by the month for about $5 a day. maybe less. Beach as far as you can see in either direction. And now is the off season so not a lot of tourists >> very tranquil & relaxing. If you seach it you will only see the fancy places but there's always more then those who advertise. Manuel Antonio is expensive and VERY touristy all year round.
