I want to fly to Quito from Lima, should I book my flights before I leave the UK OR will it be cheaper and...?

easier to just get a flight when I arrive in Lima.

I went to Thailand last year and when I got to Bangkok is was so cheap to get a flight to anywhere else in Thailand so i'm just wondering if it's the same in South America?

Thanks

Depending on how long are you going to stay in Lima would be the answer. You can find a good deal if you book in advance, but at the same time if you don't have enough time to book you might get stuck in Lima, which could take you to plan B which would be that you could take a Bus-bed from Lima to Tumbes (12 hours) and then cross the border or take a cab from Tumbes to Guayaquil and then fly to Quito, you might do a little extra tourism but it might be an ok plan B in case you can't find a cheap ticket from Lima to Quito.

I live in Honduras and yes, in Central and South America, just as in Thailand, you can usually fly the local airlines much cheaper. But, I have learned from experience that if you book in advance with the larger carrier for the local flight they will charge you quite higher rates. Spend a little time online and book directly with one of the smaller locals for the best rates. Of, if you do not have to make immediate connections, wait until you get to Lima to grab the local flight.

I would wait and book a local airline. I believe you will save some money.

If you want some info on Quito before you go, check out my website, www.quito-colonial.com. When I first went, I did not check out any website, and those that were there were not as detailed as mine. The more well-informed you are, the better.

I now own an apartment there and go often - and am always fascinated by all there is to see just in the colonial area and spreading out. I'll be going again in a few weeks and can hardly wait! Of course, I'll be adding pages to my website from there.

I agree with Hondu.

There are quite a few low-cost, local carriers that are quite aggressive on fares. These are generally NOT bookable by any of the major travel websites and most travel agents outside the local area either don't know about them, can't book their flights, or don't want to tell you about them. As Hondu said, booking flights on major airlines ahead of time *CAN* end up costing you more money in the long run.

Im heading to SA in the summer, luckily my cousins live there so I got some inside information!!! the airline below are quite good I haven't booked yet but i have checked four internal sa flights for 400.can't complain!I also got advice that Aerolineas Argentinas usually have some sort of strike on and you can get stuck in the airport with them so be careful! best of luck!

Book all legs of your trip at the same time, because package deals are usually cheaper. Unless you are fluent in Spanish it would also better to book as a package.
I went to Ecuador and loved Quito. I had a tour guide and got a lot of information about the city. There is a statue on the top of a mountain and there is an interesting local story about it.
Have a GREAT trip.
