This is a very broad question and impossible to answer without more information about your interests: likes, dislikes, budget, method of traveling the country, etc.. The best thing to do is to get a guide book (Lonely Planet and Moon guide are my favorites) and then come back here for more specific questions

Matt
I don't know why someone would push Jaco so much unless they had a big heart "bias" for it, but it certainly isn't for everyone. I certainly don't understand the Lonely Planet bashing, perhaps they didn't like Jaco. It is definitely a great place for Surfing and hanging out.

We send people to learn Spanish through http://www.spanishabroad.com Learning Spanish is always a great way to meet people and have fun during the day at night but obviously I am biased in this regard. Most of our students come alone and look for other students to do things with outside of class. Plus you really utilize your time to its fullest potential.

If you want to get a good feel for Costa Rica, you definitely want to check out Manuel Antonio, Tamarindo (and surroundings), Arenal Volcano, and Monteverde. The combination of these locations give you different perspectives and overall a very exciting trip.

Tamarindo and Manuel Antonio are beach locations with great night life. Jaco is on the way to Manuel Antonio, so you could kill two birds with one stone and take a peek around town.

You should head straight to Jaco Beach! Jaco is the # 1 destination in Costa Rica, and the closest Beach town from San Jose at only 1hr 45 minutes from the airport.

Jaco offers the best Nightlife scene in the country, with plenty of nightclubs, beach bars and other venues to choose from. You will have a great time there as a single traveler. You'll also find the best variety of tours, activities, restaurants to fit any taste and budget, and accommdations from budget to luxury.

By the way, DO NOT follow the Lonely Planet Costa Rica Books, as they are littered with inaccurate, outdated, and jaded information.

Lonely Planet was recently exposed in the media and confessed to printing a lot of 3rd hand information in most of their guides in which a Lonely Planet writer had never even visited the location they were reporting on, but got the information from the internet, or through friends.

It is very obvious that a LOT of information contained in their Lonely Planet Costa Rica books is 3rd and 4th party info as it is really inaccurate, missing a lot of important locations and tips, and is extremely mis-leading.

That is a very broad question .
Costa Rica is like Disneyland, you need at least a month to see the main attractions.
It also depends on what you like, the main tourist spots, other local areas, gringo hangouts or tico places or a mix.
For singles life and nightclub activities (Night club in Costa Rica means a strip joint ) so you will have to ask for bars or taverns.
San José, Escazu, Santa Ana are some favorite towns.
El Pueblo in San José has many discos, bars, restaurants, shops.
There are also many malls all over with nightlife businesses.
You should see at least one of the seven volcanoes such as Arenal, Irazu or Barva, Avellanas Beach, Flamingo, Tamarindo, Conchal, Brasilito, are all Beautiful places.
Tortuga Island, Tortuguero canals, white water rafting, canopy tours, city tours.
