First it is 2 words Costa Rica.>>> means rich coast.
The country is approx. the size of West Virginia. South of Nicaragua, north of Panama. The main foods are beans & rice. The pork & chicken are good, the beef leaves a lot to be desired (they don't age it).
There are beautiful beaches on both the Pacific & Carribbean sides, with beautiful mountains in between. There are volcanoes, rivers (whitewater rafting is available). There are canopy tours & rides through the rainforests.
It is basically cheap to live here.A typical meal called a "casado" (marriage), of beans, rice, salad, and choice of meat (chicken en salsa, porkchop, beef steak ect) costs under $2.00.
Spanish is the native language, but most Ticos at least understand quite a bit of English.
The people are friendly, kind, and non-combative for the most part. There is some petty theft mostly because of the crack problems. San Jose is a big city therefore more dangerous then the outlying areas.
The education system leaves a lot to be desired.
It's a beautiful country.

Costa Rica has a higher literacy rate than that or the US. The reason is the CR army was disbanned and the money was put into education. All children can attend school and are required to do so.

CR is friendly, the largest economic contributions come from tourism/eco tourism. CR plays a unique role as an exapmle and has somehow managed to avoid the cycles of dictatorship, military rule, and coruption of which many other latin american countries have dealt with. Not to say the country is not without problems, the drug trafficking is a problem especially in ports on the Carribean side.

Terms to know: Ticos/ticas are what Costa Ricans refer to themselves as. the term Pura Vida, literally Pure life, means everything is good, life life for what it is. If you are on the Carribean coast you may here "whappin" which is a shortened what's happening. This slang comes largely from the Afre caribe population in the area. They were originally brought over as agricultural laborors during the banana republic times. When the banana blight killed off the majority of the countries banana trees many were forced into poverty and the dangers of a single export economy became clear. The banana trees are now healthy but CR exports other things as well. The main exports are coffee, banana, palm tree oil, and pineapple.

I'm not sure what else you want to know but you may want to look into the book :the Costa Rica reader for more info.
